I choose the ROSL London over a hotel for better personal security as an older woman travelling alone. I wanted reception staff to recognise me and be aware of when I came and went in case anything happened to me. After an eight night stay, the only staff member who recognised me was the breakfast room manager! A very expensive... More

Pros: Great view of Edinburgh Castle. Nice hotel stay. Breakfast is very good. Close to bars. Quirky: You literally get a metal key to your room. Late night checkin is greeted by actual person so make sure you let them know prior to showing up. Or door is locked. If you stay at the top floor you will need to... More

The hotel is about 7/9 blocks from the train station, at Princess Street, facing the Princess Gardens and the Castle. The restaurant is at the 2nd floor also facing the castle with excellent food and wine. We had a spacious and confortable room and ensuite bathroom also with a great view. Breakfast was fantastic but the best of all is... More

Although not one of the cheapest hotels, the view of Edinburgh castle itself is worth paying a bit more. There always deals on the price to be found, as we did The rooms were clean, if in need of refurbishment but the beds were comfortable. The man serving breakfast gave us a map and marked out the sites we wanted... More

Room was small and disappointing. Room 14 has no view and is very small and basic. Dominated by a flat screen TV on the wall. To be avoided. The Hotel, however, is in a perfect situation but parking is non existent. The staff, from reception to maids, cleaners and waiters were polite, friendly and extremely helpful. Nothing was too much... More

We got a last minute deal at the Royal Overseas League hotel on a Saturday evening which in turn lead to a further couple of nights due to a self catering place in piershill edinburgh being a complete dive. The rooms were spotless in the Royal Overseas league, the views on our extra nights of the Castle were superb, the... More

Under Edinbrugh Castle, the League is centrally located. During the Fringe the fireworks viewed from ROSL roof are incomparable. Staff is possibly finest in Edinbrugh. Some Fringe events are actually held on premises but at any time this is a wonderful place to stay.

We stayed here for the beginning of the festival. This is a lovely, quirky, hotel right in the centre of things, on the main shopping street and just around the corner from the best of the New Town. Good sized rooms, friendly staff and good food - although service could be a little slow at times. The only issue I... More

The hotel is in a great position, a nice cooked breakfast, however our room was basic and had a large stain on the carpet at the entrance to the bathroom. The reception staff were lovely however the barman was dodgy tried to charge us and another couple for drinks we did not have so watch your bills.

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
