Murrayshall Country Estate is frequently lauded for its comprehensive amenities, including inviting fireplaces and a picturesque golf course, as well as a variety of dining experiences. Nestled in a tranquil location ideal for peaceful retreats, the estate boasts a cleanly kept environment and rooms, amidst occasional maintenance remarks. While the atmosphere exudes a blend of relaxation and luxury with homely traditional elements, some guests feel the value is diminished by unforeseen charges and pricey offerings. Service quality appears inconsistent, with reports of both commendable and lackluster encounters. Rooms are typically spacious but may sometimes fall short on decor and freshness.

We chose this hotel based on other great reviews from pet owners. We wanted somewhere to go for a nice weekend break and also be able to take our four legged friend.

Usually dog-friendly means you will be given a grotty room at the back of the hotel and your pet will have to remain locked in the room at all times. Murrayshall was refreshingly different. We were given a nice suite just a short walk from the actual hotel. It was really clean and perfect for our needs. It was also really quiet and we didn't hear many people coming and going. There was a dog bed and water bowl ready for us in the room. We also received a welcome pack for our dog consisting of a blanket, drying mitt, ball, pack of treats, and spare poop bags! Such a lovely touch.

The hotel itself was lovely and the staff were very friendly. The food in the Cairns restaurant was really good, and although I'd hoped for a little more choice, the meal I selected did not disappoint. Neither did the dessert!

Unless you like golf or spa treatments, there wasn't an awful lot to do there, but that suited us fine! We enjoyed the peace and quiet with a few drinks in the lovely bar and library areas and went for walks around the lovely landscaped grounds.

Sitting on a hillside a couple of miles north of Perth is this fine country house hotel in the middle of a golf course. Our room was very clean, quiet and very nicely refurbished, equipped with both tea and coffee making facilities. A glass top for the unit or a tray for cups would be advisable. the ensuite was quite spacious and clean with a walk-in shower and both a rain shower and hand shower attachments. The legend on the shower controls were not good and no indent so turning off the hot rain shower you can easily get a cold spray from the hand shower. A user unfriendly device from Bristains unfortunately. A hand rail in the shower would be a nice safety addition, but it all worked well and the heated mirror was a nice feature. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. The food served for dinner and breakfast were all cooked to a high standard and we enjoyed everything. It would be nice if they had some smoked salmon at breakfast but they were waiting on deliveries. Having stayed in several hotels around Perth over the years this is probably the best.

Beautiful property where I'd happily stay again. Our bedroom felt luxurious with a thick carpet and high quality curtains. What a fabulous view!

Just ask for your plate to be warmed, if ordering hot food.

The location is lovely. Great views from some rooms and resturant. Grounds well kept. The junior staff very welcoming and hard working, they want you to enjoy the stay. My access room was easy to reach, roomy, good size wet room. But the wet room shower main drain backed up and flooded floor area and had to call for assistance which came quickly and stoped the flooding, but this shouldn’t have been an issue if the main shower drain had been deep cleaned. I was there partly on business and pleasure due to game fair weekend. So hotel was full. Main resturant well appointed. Menu very limited and repeats, So if there for several nights it gets boring. The 7 course tasting menus is just a duplication of the standard full menu, so if you eat that tasting menu, then you have tasted all dishes in one go! They take every opportunity to make supplementary charges for veg, steak etc. Which is disappointing as 2 basic courses were £39.i found desserts looked lovely but were too sweet.
I felt safe and comfortable in the hotel. Golf course looked good, the junior chap in golf shot very helpful. Yes id stay there again in the full knowledge that they know how to charge, and as a solo traveller room rate is fairly high. On departure my bill had several errors, I discussed these with the financial director who was on the desk issuing bills. Yes, it was amended, so i paid for the correct food and drink, yes she was aware of the flooding issue, no apology and not even a free coffee as a token apology.. So lovely location, it will be an expensive hotel to run, nice traditional accommodation, great views, junior staff i think work hard, but felt the management team were more interested in billing and on such a busy weekend, they kept a low profile. So that was my disappointment.
I continued my travels around Scotland where i found excellent accommodation and food in other locations which offered immaculate rooms, excellent food, and service but not quiet as expensive as Murrayshall. .

Second visit just after new year. Good points were the spacious bedroom with a view across snowy, misty golf course. Hotel offered option of foregoing housekeeping for £7.50 pp to spend in bar which seems a great idea when towels don't need changed everyday. Delighted to have rooibos tea on offer. Restaurant manager stopped to chat to guests, give recommendations on sightseeing and gave feedback from chef after we'd commented on dinner.
Not so good points:
Disappointed this time with the tasting menu. The cheese bread pudding was tasty and different, but we couldn't discern walnut. Beetroot and goat's cheese tart was pretty and delicious, but we couldn't taste horseradish. It was good to see pigeon on the menu, and beef was tender. The vital lemon ingredient missing from dessert, leaving only meringue and cream, toffee souffle beautifully fluffy but just too sweet and bland. Table near fire door had cold draught and had to fetch blanket from car. Sitting in the bar could be draughty also even sitting in front of the fire. Maybe they should keep the two doors closed.
The shower was a trickle and tv was fixed at right angles to the bed. A swing arm would help. The room was very clean, but there were some large cobwebs on central light.

We’d booked the exclusive use of the spa from 10 am until 2pm, with a 60 minute treatment & a private Prosecco afternoon tea package. The spa is located in an old lodge at the hotel’s entrance. You need to park at the hotel & walk as the four parking spaces were used by the staff; not pleasant if it’s raining.
With eight in our party we were quite squashed in the uninspiring, faded lounge area (the lodge has been a dwelling). They take upto twelve guests; not sure how that would work? The therapists were very welcoming.
In a corner of the lounge, there were tea bags, a hot water urn (on the floor), juice & brownies - but no coffee or milk! The therapists gave us coffee & milk from their kitchen, which is behind a curtain off the guests’ lounge. There were limited side tables to rest your drinks. NB the spa doesn’t permit alcohol to be consumed. There were mismatched robes & slippers - some in men’s sizes. We’d to change in the lounge.
The therapy rooms are up a steep staircase & my clothes, bag etc. had to go on the floor as there was no chair in the tiny room. The treatment itself was excellent & the therapist was very professional. The treatment rooms & the one bathroom are very dated, but clean & warm. The spa’s decor is very out of keeping with the hotel’s ambience.
Afternoon tea in the hotel library was 10/10, & very generous portions. One bottle of Prosecco amongst eight was skimpy though! The servers were very engaging & helpful. £108 per person for the experience.

Be careful with room selection and be prepared for excessive food supplement charges.

House: On arrival, looked all we had expected of a smart Country House Hotel set in lovely surroundings. However, from check in (slow and without empathy) onwards, it went downhill fast.
Room: We had a 'cosy’ room, which looked fine on the hotel website but, if any are like Room 20, should be avoided! Smaller than an equivalent Premier Inn room with space (just) for 2 chairs (we had to ask for the second one), small window with view directly onto a wall, plus bathroom with half size bath and basic shower over.
Dinner: £39.95 for 2 course dinner with many items having a surcharge eg mains £8-£12, plus £5 for extra vegetables, and surcharges on many of the desserts. Outrageous, given that we were sold the package on the premise of a fine dining experience which, turned out to be anything but.
Breakfast: A disgrace. First morning, ordered from chef full Scottish breakfast (OK) and Eggs Florentine. Latter - eggs bullet hard boiled, with lashings of barely warm thick mayonnaise. Other two mornings was 'help yourself' to hot food in tureens. All looked very unappetising so, with option to order from the kitchen, we did. Frankly, equally awful with scrambled egg, which if not powdered the eggs were from very strange hens! Each day guests took croissants etc which seemed to have been around for days, very stale, and certainly we found them inedible.
Bistro: We paid £40 each for a steak. Friends had the chicken curry. The chicken was pink and waitress, when challenged, commented “its thigh meat so it’s always pink".
General: Clearly understaffed. No lift. Otherwise, lovely views from principle rooms.
A grossly overpriced 3 night stay, at least twice the cost of a Premier Inn. Bitterly disappointing and we will certainly never return to this Hotel.

Travelling with dogs, the pictures of the wonderful estate convinced this was worth the effort. It is true, there are hundreds of acres, alas, the vast majority is made of of two golf courses, indeed right up to around 20 m of the hotel. Bit disappointed that dog walking choices would be limited. £50 Extra for the dog deep clean charge which is pricey, but the status of the Hotel and room rates would reflect its country house location. After arrival, a wedding party were in the hotel, so it was busy. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. My accomodation was not in the main building, but in a section reserved for dogs around 200m of a walk, then flight of stairs. Not great when walking more than 50m gives me great pains in my knee joints. Outstanding room size, outstanding bathroom with free standing bath and shower area seperate. Great comfortable bed. Breakfast , that is hot breakfast cost extra which I paid, was disappointing. Fairly average produce. But nice touch of Scottish butter paper wrapped in wee pats. Nice touch. This hotel must be a great location as a wedding reception venue, and very popular with golf parties. A French group said that their stay was OK, not exceptional but pleasant. I would mirror this comment.

Dear Ralph, Thank you for your review, we do have a lovely estate in which we have a couple of walks you can take your furry friend on these maps are located at reception. the extra charge for the dog is for a goodie bag on arrival and the cost of extra cleaning for the room. this is charged at £25 per night. I'm very pleased to read that the staff here at Murrayshall were very accommodating. Breakfast is only charged if your booking was a room only, if you had booked a Bed and Breakfast rate this would have been included. overall we take feedback positive and thank you for your time, We look forward to your return.

The bar lounge area whilst busy is very strangely set out and we felt that we could not enjoy a conversation with our friends as everyone round about are sitting very close and can hear everything you say, not comfortable or intimate at all. The room was supposed to be an upgrade, but was very basic and smelt of damp and we could not get the windows to stay open for fresh air as the sash cords are not working. But the worst was the restaurant. We ordered two bottles of house red wine and were charged £126 for wine that costs a lot less in the supermarket. The set price a la carte menu is just nonsense as almost every item has a surcharge and there are little or no vegetables with your main course, which is really not healthy at all, instead you've to pay £5 for a meagre portion of carrots or chips. We ordered steak and it came with brown sauce, a chewed up mushroom, and chips. We asked if there was any veg and the only offering was carrots. I've got news for your chef, carrots do not go with fillet steak and neither does brown sauce. This restaurant is definitely not haute cuisine, but charges way more than the food is worth. For four of us, three courses (£47each before supplements), and two bottles of wine with a few beers and gin n tonics, the bill was £679. We were gobsmacked!! When in this neck of the woods, we usually stay in the Fonab in Pitlochry, and I'm afraid it will be back to the Fonab as it is a master class in excellent accommodation and with a menu to match. Murrayshall definitely DOES NOT have it all.

To get a dog-friendly room, you are provided with a suite. Not only is this great for room, they provide a dog bed, dog bowls, treats and poo bags, plus a doggy blanket. It makes sense as there's a green strip of grass outside and plenty of dog waste bins, so it's convenient and you're unlikely to disturb anyone. They also allow you to take your dog to breakfast, provided you're in a slightly different (quieter) area of the restaurant. They have 2 restaurants and a bar - dogs are allowed in one of the restaurants and the bar area, and if you want to eat from the other restaurant with your dog they'll let you sit in the bar but with the restaurant menu. Gorgeous suite, very friendly and very comfortable. A little bit pricier than what we were hoping for, but it was worth it and we are planning on returning.

Hi, as far as I can remember the hotel is disabled friendly, although I can’t speak for the rooms, there are ground floor rooms available but I’m not sure if they have disabled facilities within. The entrance to reception may have a couple of small stairs that are not very high, I’m sure the hotel will have a ramp if required. The dining room and bar are all on the ground level with easy access in and out.
