This was the last stop on my four day trip before heading home and sadly this was the most disappointing hotel. I had read the mixed reviews, ageing decor and all that but the location was central, it advertised a car park, which is important for me travelling alone. I realise you get what you pay for, but cheapness offers...

I wanted a hotel to break the journey back from Glasgow to Oxford. I wasn't looking for luxury; just good value (ie cheap) and somewhere to sleep for one night. And that's pretty much exactly what I got. The hotel is a bit of a time warp and our two bedrooms were definitely in need of a bit of refurb...

After reading mixes reviews , I was a little apprehensive of our stay in Royal Kings Arms ... how wrong was I?! Me , my partner and our baby stayed in a room on the third floor ( cot provided by hotel ) the room was homely and comfortable . fantastic location to access lancaster and the surrounding area. Historic hostelry - Charles Dickens was a guest here! Large old style hotel with lots of interesting decor details including stained glass windows and the occasional chandelier. Reception was fine. Ensuite room of good size, decor a bit jaded but clean with television and free WiFi. Breakfast was OK. Parking available for £5. Best thing is the price £45 for...

This was my second visit so that tells you the place is OK. This hotel was probably one of the best in Lancaster in the past but is a little faded at present. Everything was clean and the staff were excellent. The hotel has its own (chargeable) parking which is a bit tricky to find but out of the way...

Had my birthday party here (as usual), fantastic night (as usual). Lisa and Damian are a credit to the hotel. They went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect. The other staff involved in the evening played a "blinder". Thank you all. Communications were very good from booking right through to the end of the evening. The...

Great local pub with fantastic Sunday dinner. Really good and also good value. Staff obviously care. Also if anyone is reading this who travel on the M6 it's less than a minute from Burton services, where you can turn off. For same price as the service station you can eat really good food with a proper atmosphere. Thanks guys.

It is obvious that the main strength of this hotel is staff: very helpful, friendly and polite. Fine breakfast. However I can't say good things about the room. It was too small for two. Unable to use the shower normally. The bathroom should be repaired.

Having previously stayed at this hotel we expected ' character ' as we knew it was in need of an update but the room we were allocated was the worst I have seen anywhere. Wallpaper was peeling off the walls, the bathroom was really shabby and I was reluctant to walk with bare feet on the carpet. Admittedly I booked...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We always offer the best prices to our guests direct through hotel reception so be sure to call us first. Fantastic all round venue in a central location, ideal for weddings and functions, everything under one roof. In the heart of the historic city of Lancaster, with views of its famous castle, stands the Royal Kings Arms Hotel. Originally built in 1625 and later rebuilt in 1879, the hotel was immortalized by Charles Dickens in his tale of "The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices". This Grade II listed hotel has 55 comfortable en-suite bedrooms, including the luxury Castle Suite, with its four poster bed and views of the castle, the entrance to which is just 50 yards away. With origins dating back almost 1,000 years Lancaster Castle, a Grade 1 listed building, occupies a city-centre hilltop location on the site of three successive Roman forts and has been described by English Heritage as "not only the North-West's most important historic and archaeological monument but also of international importance". Other historic buildings in Lancaster include the Judge's Lodgings and the Doll Museum. The sea plays a big part in Lancaster's history and the Maritime Museum is a fascinating place to visit. Beyond the city, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach, while the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool are a short drive away. Breakfast is available when checking in at reception, we do have car parking facilities at £5 per car per stay at the rear of the hotel. ... more   less
