My daughter and I recently stayed for three nights. I'd heard the hotel referred to as "shabby chic" - no, it's just shabby! Our room was TINY and very worn. I was so concerned when we first walked in that I stripped the bed to check for bugs and even looked at the mattress - very clean. The tiny bathroom...

I booked this for a group of 10 and therefor saw 5 rooms, taking the smallest least desireable for myself (which colored my review). I knew what I getting into when I booked. Pros: Like others say - unbeatable location, low price, friendly staff, character... Cons: Character means... old - for better and worse. No lift, hall widths and room...

This lovely hotel is not modern or luxurious. If you dropped a marble on the floor, it would roll all night. But it's in the heart of Paris and bursting with charm. Get a room with a view of Notre Dame. It is TOTALLY worth the few extra Euros. This was a perfect crash pad after long days touring the...

I opted for the La Esmeralda because of its location - in the Latin quarter across the river from Notre Dame. True, the price is good for the location, but I couldn't believe what a dump it is! Paint is peeling, bathroom tiles are cracked and missing...it looks like not a bit of maintenance has been done in the past...

I decided last minute to visit my sister in Paris who was celebrating her birthday. I had enough miles and away I went. I booked 2 nights at the Esmeralda via E-mail with a fax followup with my creit card info. I stayed with her for me first night in the Marais at the Christian Lacriox decorated le Petit Moulin...

Stayed here with my girlfriend for 4 nights when we were in Paris for a buddy's wedding. The location was excellent, the bed was comfortable, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was a bit too flowery for my liking, and the room was way too small, especially with our luggage taking up space. Felt a bit...

If you're after a flashy, modern hotel then this is not for you but I would absolutely recommend this hotel to everyone else. We stayed in room 4 and had a wonderful view of the park across the road and more importantly Notre Dame. It's short walk to all of the beautiful alley ways full of bars and restaurants in...

Hotel Esmeralda is in the perfect location and the views of Notre Dame are awesome. My sister and I are in our mid 20's and we loved it. There are many great cafes and places to eat nearby in the Latin Quarter, cool bars too. The rooms are quirky and definitely add to the charm of the hotel. There is...

This hotel is okay. But that is all. Our room was tiny, which normally I don't mind but this was SMALL! We were shown a room at the front, with a view, as somone had cancelled and we could have had it for a cheaper rate. The carpet was COVERED in hair. It didn't look like it had been vacumed...

My girlfriend and I stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in a room on the first floor with a beautiful view to the Notre-Dame. Very cosy room with 'English' wallpaper and some extravagant furniture. This hotel is something special, somewhat difficult to make a booking (we had to make 3 phonecalls and send 2 faxes before we got a...

Staying in Odeon / Saint-Michel

Neighbourhood Profile
Odeon / Saint-Michel
As the bustling center of entertainment for the residents of the Rive Gauche, the activity at Odéon never stops. Boulevards are lined with traditional cafes, restaurants, and boutique cinemas. The streets surrounding the fountain at Saint-Michel provide eateries from around the world. Lively bars are just next door and the prototypical terraced French brasserie is on every corner. The setting for this area is second to none; the Haussmann-style boulevards are contrasted by monumental architecture and overshadowed by the iconic Notre Dame, all within a moment’s walk from the Seine. This neighbourhood's world-famous bookshops, cafés, and streets will not fail to impress you.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
One of the most original hotels in the French capital. Opened over 100 years ago in a 17th century building, the Esmeralda Hotel bears the name of the gypsy girl that, thanks to her grace, illuminated the story by Victor Hugo. Central, well communicated, charming, quiet, comfortable ... Each room is unique and has its own personality. Artists such as Hugo Pratt, Béjart, Gainsbourg ... were regular clients at the hotel. You can also talk about Paris, art and literature as most of our receptionists are writers and poets with PhD at the Sorbonne. Please, do not miss the authentic flavor of the Latin Quarter. Be warmly welcomed at the nearest hotel to Notre Dame for the best value for money in Paris: the staff will immediately address all your queries with their proverbial kindness. ... more   less
