If you like to go to standard hotels, like the "resort type" that the rooms, the gardens, the pools, the food, are the same, and you dont notice in what country you are, dont come here. La Pedrera Hotel is located in a beautiful beach in Uruguay, named La pedrera, it was founded when nothing existed in this town, not even the town itself, by the same family that owns it still. So you can see the pictures of the hotel in its beginnings with the actual owner as a child. The common areas, both swimming pools, one out side and an indoor temperate one, really warm, the dinning room, the game living room are great, wide spaces with beautiful views. It is located 2 blocks from the beach and about 4 blocks to the main street full of original reaturants and small stores. The breakfast has wonderful pastries and cakes, however needs to add some whole wheat bread and protein stuff. The rooms we chose, were the ones with no sea view, we chose them because they had a beautiful terrace, wood made, surrounded by pine trees and birds. The room itself was small, with old furniture, in not so good shape, the bathroom was ok but with no air extraction, the owner is working on it. We didnt care about the room because with that terrace and the common spaces we enjoy a lot the place and we just used to sleep, with a good air conditioning device. The people are extremely nice, open to what ever you need, they changed our tv set for a better one in our request. If you like the sea view, they are a little bit newer, but you will have sun in the morning, in case you like to wake up late. It was a great experience, the staff is friendly and are willing to please you in a familiar way.

Choosing this hotel for a short trip along the East coast of Uruguay, was a mistake. It was a last minute impuls booking and we should have checked reviews first. All the horrors you read, are true. I will not repeat them all. Indeed, also the hygiene and smell of my mattress was disgusting, and made it impossible to sleep. We were one of the first guests this season, and the room was dirty! The glass in the bathroom, with last years tooth paste. I have traveled a lot and slept in many hotels around the world. I think this one qualifies for the worst ever experience. When I checked out around 10am, I suggested I paid only part of the high rate. There was no reception staff that could assist me. Only cleaning staff (5pp). I was told the owner manager was asleep and there was no one to receive money. I paid USD 100 of the 160 USD. Still too much. All this took some time. We left leaving the cash on the desk. Half an hour after I left the owner called my cell phone number (around 11am) and immediately started insulting and threatening me using language that cannot be repeated here. Horrible. All in all, I can not advise to stay in this hotel.

Once this must have been a nice hotel, the rooms are tiny but basically nice. However, at least in the last 10 years, there has really nothing been done to maintain this place. For instance, when having a shower, you must be careful to avoid the tab falling off. In addition, everything, particularly the bed, was filthy and smelled quite awful. There was a nice balcony, but the chairs, the table and the hammok were disgustingly filthy. I wonder if in Uruguay there is no control as to the number of stars the hotels may have and to their pricing, because to call such a place a four-star hotel is clearly ridiculous. The only four-star element here is the price. There are a few good elements, though. The airco worked and was not very noisy. There is a nice swimming pool.
