I'll start with the good things: great location, nice and friendly staff, comfortable beds and nice bedrooms, clean, and reasonable prices. And now for the "bad" things: no AC in the room, small hotel and narrow corridors, no elevator, hot and a bit noisy. For a few extra euros you can get a place much more better than this one, but it's not a bad hotel.
Perfect location just next to the harbour in La Rochelle. Rooms are small but clean and modern. The rooms are very hot and as others have commented, it can be a bit noisy outside at times. A large fan was provided in our room which made it bearable. There is no parking available so we parked in an underground car park just across the square from the hotel. Prices were ok, we paid €13 for around 16 hours. It was perfectly fine for a short stay.
Axe Hotel Vieux Port could not be in a better location! You step out of the door and La Rochelle is right in front of you. There is also a very handy Carrefour City store 20 seconds walk away. We stayed on the ground floor in the room designed for people who are disabled, hence it was fairly spacious with a big bathroom. Just a note here though- it's a good job that my husband and I have been together a long time as the sliding door to the bathroom was slightly too small so there were gaps either side when you pulled it to and the loo is right next to the door! The room was kept spotlessly clean. As we were on the ground floor the huge window was opaque with a shutter for security, so although we couldn't see out the room was light and bright.
We stayed at the Axe hotel in La Rochelle for 10 nights booking two single rooms. We have stayed in La Rochelle many times at different hotels/locations and hence are in a good position to provide feedback. Good aspects of the hotel: 1. Excellent location near to the waterfront and all the main sights 2. Pleasent room if slightly on the small side 3. Very clean and comfortable 4. Staff pleasent and helpful Negatives: 1. Very noisy, particularly at night due to a nightclub/late night bar a few doors up from the hotel. The customers would spill outside the bar near to my bedroom window until 4 am, most were extremely drunk and loud. The hotel is also next to a fairly busy road with scooters constantly passing. You can significantly reduce the noise by closing the windows which do an excellent job, however that leads me onto my second negative point below. 2. No air conditioning. This would not be a big problem other than the fact that you need to keep the windows shut all night due to the noise. The room itself also has very hot exposed water pipes which makes it unbearable. Most nights I only managed to get couple of hours sleep. …
A small, friendly hotel situated close to the old port area of the town. The rooms were small but adequate. Very charming. Couple of good bars just around the corner. Some of the rooms faced the square which was home to a market. No on site parking. Not sure where cars could park as we were travelling by motorcycle and so were able to park in the square across the road with the bike in sight of our room. Nice bakery around the corner opposite the marina.
