Booked a standard room the night before, when we arrived, they upgraded us to a prestige room. We enjoyed our stay so much that we wanted to stay an extra night. The director managed to accomodate us whilst the room we were staying in was unavaible the following day. Hotel conveniently located, room comfortable and relaxing, covid situation well-managed.

We checked in here after we walked out of the "Le Yacht Man" which was awful and you can read my comments on that "hostel". This hotel is great, its very clean, it offers parking at a charge and breakfast is extra like in most hotels in France. The staff were very helpful and friendly and there was an added bonus of a nice English lady behind the desk, who fully appreciated are situation having walked out of our first choice hotel. The rooms were spotless clean, modern light and airey, bathrooms were matched in quality and appearance. One little moan was at breakfast they did nt make it know that they actually provide to order hot food, eggs, bacon etc...and only that we seen it coming from the kitchen that made us aware...and once ordered it was the best bacon you will get in France, the cold selection was excellent with amble choices, coffee and water are free all day in the hotel which is nice touch. This was are second stay here at this hotel and wouldnt hesitate to return in the future and the price is really competitive.

We arrived in La Rochelle on Ascension Day, which turns out to be a HUGE holiday in the area, with very large crowds everywhere and very chaotic. The staff immediately took our luggage, showed us where to park the car (right behind the hotel) and made us feel relaxed and taken care of. The room was huge, very quiet, overlooking a grassy seating area with very comfortable bed, linens, and bathrobes. Large shower with plenty of hot water. Delicious chocolates in the room, along with coffee service supplies. The breakfast was excellent with fresh squeezed orange juice, hot and cold selections, as well as pastries, breads, and jams. Due to the crowds, we were unable to make it to Ile de Re for oysters as planned, but one young woman at reception explained how and where to have an even better oyster experience at the market in town. We followed her advice to the letter and to this day we remember it as one of the most fun experiences we had in France over 21 days. The hotel is perfectly situated to visit all the sites, restaurants, and cafes/bars in La Rochelle, but the staff really makes this place stand out.

I booked that hotel for a one night stay through booking. I Exchanged with the hotel once my room was confirmed about parking. They replied to my questions.
The day of the actual booking, I was driving to La Rochelle and the hotel calls me to say they had overbooked the hotel and that my reservation was therefore cancelled. How nice! The guy on the phone didn’t even apologised, didn’t offer an explanation or an alternative.
Disgraceful!

Cordialement.

Shocking that this hotel is rated 4 stars. As many reviewers have noted, this hotel is in a good location, however, it is small, old, and dare I say, quite dark and dingy. The entire hotel has a musty/mouldy smell - the intensity of the smell varies depending where you are in the hotel- the strongest is on level 2 where the smell will hit you immediately. We were initially assigned to room 214 and the intense musty/mouldy smell was so bad that it kept me up all evening and I forced myself to breathe through my mouth to make it through the night. The evening manager was very kind and helpful when I asked to change the room the next morning. However, when I called in the morning to make the change, the staff were very hesitant to do so, and told me that they are fully booked so they didn't want to change my room and said she can come in to "fix" the smell (how to wipe out years of mould in a 5 mins visit?). The director of the hotel spoke to me after I further insisted that I was told that I was able to change rooms in the morning. Quite surprisingly, the director was incredibly rude and condescending to me on the phone. He kept demanding why I wanted to change rooms and how inconvenient it would be for his team as the hotel is fully booked and rudely accused me of making up the unbearable smell "smell, what smell??". Thankfully, I stood my ground and he agreed to move us to room 115 later on the day (which was better and less smelly). Perhaps he felt guilty for the way he spoke to me, but we appreciated that there was a nice handwritten note left for us apologising for the inconvenience we had with the previous room.
On a separate note, my mother in law (mid 70s) was also staying in the hotel in a separate room with my young daughter. She booked an extra bed and ended up sleeping on it one evening. To her horror, the bed literally broke in the middle of the night and injured her back. The hotel staff did not seem very apologetic and caring. They waived the extra bed, but refused to extend any further goodwill gesture for the injury and our bad experience overall (her room, 215, was also very smelly of mould).
In summary, the hotel is well located however it is definitely not what you imagine a 4 stars hotel to look like and to pay for. We booked 2 rooms at €275 each (+ tax), per night, breakfast and parking was not included. The experience was definitely not worth it (2.5 stars hotel, 3 stars to be generous) and has left us a very bad taste (as previous reviewers have mentioned, our clothes now smell of the distinct mould of the hotel) and my mother in law will need to see a physio for her injured back. Highly not recommended.

We thank you for taking the trouble to write this comment, we are very sorry if you did not appreciate our establishment, which is too small for you, indeed we are an independent establishment with 41 rooms, in the city center of France, you are certainly more accustomed to staying in resorts and have therefore not been sensitive to our decoration. On the other hand, the rooms in which you stayed were renovated at the beginning of the year, and they are permanently occupied without complaint from our customers, we take note of your remarks to improve the experience of our customers. Best regards.

Very warm welcome, and really attentive service. The breakfast is delicious and definitely worth it!
The room was great, noiseless and with bedding you would want to stay in.
In addition, the hotel is really well located for visiting La Rochelle.

One night stay at the Hotel de La Monnaie. The hotel is well located near the Vieux Port and nearby restaurants. Special thanks to Caroline in reception who welcomed us, pointed the city highlights on the local map, recommended various restaurants and also helped us navigate to and park in the tight car park. Additional mention for the young man serving breakfast who happily pointed out the cakes he had baked for guests -- all very tasty. Overall, a pleasant stay. Would recommend.

My wife and I completely loved staying in this hotel. Alexandre, Armelle and Souad made our stay very memorable. They were highly professional and friendly and extremely helpful. The hotel was immaculate and the breakfast was delicious and plentiful. The hotel is situated in a great location - close to the center of town which helped make our stay very pleasant. I definitely would recommend this hotel!

Just back from a long weekend in La Rochelle. What a lovely town! We stayed here and it worked out really well. This hotel has a fantastic location, in a quiet enough spot but close to everything. Turn left and you are minutes by foot to the park and beach, turn right & you are in the charming town. The hotel is in a beautiful old building, rooms are very clean & the bathroom was modern with a great shower. Breakfast was a small buffet but offered lovely fresh bread, pastry's, cheese, fresh fruit, smoked salmon, cold meats etc alongside some warm options. The waiter offered us a delicious freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice and was happy to cook us some boiled eggs. The reception staff also were very friendly and helpful. This is a relaxed hotel with a casual vibe. Like La Rochelle itself, not too big and not too small, just right :) Thank you to La Monnaie for being such lovely hosts. I will definitely return.
