Historic hotel in an excellent location, both for going to the historic center and to the sea, large rooms (we were on the third floor, served by a lift) even a bathroom with two bathrooms.
The staff helpful and courteous
Excellent French breakfast.
Quality/price it is definitely a place I would return to.

I had an excellent 3 nights here. Menton is a lovely place and Hotel Grand des Ambassadeurs is a worthy hotel. The staff are helpful and friendly. My room was spacious and well furnished. The bathroom with its marble tiling was a delight. The breakfast is on the basic side. No fruit juice and poor quality coffee.
There is no evening restaurant, but plenty of places around. Monday to Friday the is a most excellent lunchtime buffet. There is no bar. The reception area is very impressive in its grandeur. The main disadvantage is that even though it is advertises as having free wifi this is not accessible in the bedroom. Only in the public area.

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights and it was fantastic. One of our best hotel experiences ever. We arrived with an early flight but they had the room prepared for us even though it was several hours until check-in started.
The room and the interior is very beautiful and charming. Comfy beds, clean and high ceilings. The hotel loby is decorated with funny decorations everywhere that gives it a very charming and warm feeling. It feels like coming home.
The staff is wonderful and friendly.
The hotel is situated just 5 min from the train station, 5 min to the beach and 10 min to city and shopping.
When we come back to Menton next time, we will for sure make reservations at this hotel!

Wonderful experience in this hotel where culture and comfort come together. During our stay there was an art exhibition, which was really lovely. We were there during the lemon festival, the hotel is right next to the gardens where the event takes place. We can't wait to come back for our summer vacation.

I stayed here for (5) nights in August and had a difficult stay. Although the room itself was spacious, the furnishings are old and tired, the electrical outlets did not always function and the loud sounds at night made for some challenging sleeping. The breakfast is modest with very limited choices. The hotel seems understaffed. There is little in the way of true comfort and embellishments and the whole place feels like it's just hanging on. To me, the place seemed sad, with a depressed air. I was anxious to spend as little time in the hotel as possible. There is nothing 'grand' about it.

I’m sorry to say that - as others have said - there is nothing grand about this hotel. This hotel is tired and sad, it put a bit of a damper on a 3 night stay. I feel badly for the staff, they have many strict rules. During my stay, the fridge was broken and leaked so I had to use my bath towels to clean up the water on the floor (we were given two). Staff told me I would have to wait til the next day for two more towels as the closet was locked up every afternoon. In addition, no corkscrew available, no parking, no toiletries, no parking, old and threadbare linens and the breakfast looked like it had been served multiple days earlier. It’s a shame really, but save yourself some money and frustration and choose a different hotel. I certainly won’t be going back.

Grand Hotel des ambassadeurs , Menton
We arrived to the hotel late at night. It looked beautiful. The lobby was two floors up, but there was no one to help with luggage and no handicap accessibility. We were asked to pay in full on our arrival without the option of seeing the room. We’ve never ever encountered this anywhere in the world. We stayed there for four nights.

We got a very large room but there’s nothing convenient about it. Although promised, there wasn’t internet in the room. The old bathroom is tiled with ITALIAN marble, but that’s it. No soap, tissues, hooks, hangers, body lotion, shelves. No place for our toiletries. No mirror anywhere in the room.
Trash can, the only one in the room, was broken, unusable, and although we put it out the door and requested a few times for a replacement, never got one!
The floors were never washed, neither the bathroom. Room was very dusty and floors were filthy.
The Fridge didn’t work, and we lost about 20 Euros worth of supplies.
Although there’s a coffee maker and a kettle, there’s never coffee or tea bags in the room. Always had do go down to the front desk to ask for some, as the téléphone didn’t function.
Bed sheets were never changed during our four nights stay!
As the Téléphone didn’t work -every time we needed something , soap, towels, coffee and tea, repairs etc... we had to go down to the reception.
The hotel is understaffed, 2 people run the place - a Clerk in the lobby who also is in charge of the buffet in the morning, and the second one is the cleaning lady. They are both very pleasant but they seem lost, and there’s no one to tell them what to do.
There’s never a manager or owner around !
The breakfast is very poor, watery coffee, milk, hot water and a few very cheap low quality tea bags.
There are a few plates with some fruit but they were almost all gone by 8:30, and there’s no one to replenish them. It just looks sad.
The hotel is very old and has seen better days. It’s a very old glory hotel which became just a place to sleep in. There are no basic services for tourists. The lobby is filled with books and albums about catholicisme, there’s a stand with bibles in the entrance , and there’s even a church !
It certainly is not a four star hotel, and certainly is overpriced !!!

The Grand Hotel des Ambassadeurs is not so grand. It is more like a bed and breakfast guesthouse. It has certainly seen better days. We were early so did not expect our junior suite to be ready but were surprised when told that check-in was at 4pm. (Also surprised that check-out was strictly 10am). These were not notified to us at the time of booking and seemed unusual compared to most European hotels. Our perceptions were that the staff were under instruction not to admit guests to rooms until 4pm, ready or not. We were offered breakfast as “a gift” since it was not included in our room rate. The breakfast was the usual French continental breakfast, but unfortunately the coffee in the urn was undrinkable, despite what looked like a nice espresso machine sitting on the nearby bar (which was never open). Fortunately, the little café opposite made amazing espresso coffees. The hotel advertises it has a restaurant, but it was very closed, and used as the breakfast room. When we were eventually showed to our “junior suite”, it was a large room at the back of the hotel without much outlook, poorly decorated and furnished, (almost felt like being in a good back-packers’ hostel,) although the marble-tiled bathroom with separate shower was excellent. A few things missing that were included in our booking sheet: no espresso maker, no bathrobe, no slippers. And no facial tissues – whoever heard of a 4-star hotel that does not provide facial tissues? The air-conditioning was effective and very quiet. Not the cleanest room we have had in a hotel. The good things were the staff – there were very welcoming, polite and helpful – but appeared to be very much under strict control of the owner/manager(?) who seemed to appear at breakfast and in the mornings. Some reminders of “Fawlty Towers” about this place. The entrance/reception rooms to the hotel were nice – and gave a hint of the history. A strange place, full of books on the catholic faith and even a catholic chapel. It is unfortunate that the accommodation in Menton are so limited because Menton is a very nice town. Perhaps now not in favour as much as the other towns on the Riviera, but it is crying out for a 5-star luxury hotel. This is not one of them.

So what makes this hotel special?

The location. It was our first time on the Cote d'Azur and we struck lucky with Menton. It has the same chic as Nice and Cannes without the bling or glitz. That said, the hotel is 5 or 6 minutes from the train station and you can zip along the coast in no time.

The staff. Especially the reception staff who go out of their way to learn your names, your itinerary, give out bits of advice and give a smile when you are on holiday. Luca is great!

The room was great and all done out to a high specification. You can imagine the parties that have been held in the Ambassadeurs over the last 150 years.

Yes, we had a few niggles over towels not being changed and the odd ant on the floor but nothing the hotel couldn't instantly remedy so it didn't spoil the holiday.

Sitting on the balcony of your room at the end of the day, just as the temperature was cooling, with a glass of wine was a joy.
