Notable for its interesting red-hued facade and golden metallic bear over the entrance, this hotel in Freiburg is the oldest in Germany. If you ask to go downstairs in the cellar, you can see the remains of the old street which is way below the current level. Fascinating piece of history here.

We spent 3 nights in Freiburg, and were very pleased with our stay at the Hotel zum Roten Baeren. It is right where you want to be, in the Old City, making everything within walking distance. The breakfasts were sumptuous, and the entire staff very friendly and helpful. WiFi was so-so, and you have to park at a nearby public... More

Tremendous staff who despite our late arrival took great care to keep the restaurant open for us, sort parking, and set up beds for children in our room. The hotel is right in the middle of the gorgeous old town, and as such there is noise: our junior suite faced onto the street with trams and busy life outside, and... More

This hotel gave me mixed feeling. On à positive note, the place is full of charm and very well located in the old town of Freiburg. The staff was very friendly and prices were OK. The hotel is clean as well. However on the flip side, the room really needs a renovation. All the furniture were in rather ancient. The... More

The Red Bear is the oldest inn in Germany, so the architecture (narrow hallways, small rooms) is old-fashioned but that just adds to its charm. The food and wine options are very high-quality, and the restaurant, facilities and rooms are clean and well cared for. Staff is friendly, and the hotel is situated in a fairly quiet pedestrian area within... More

We stayed at the Roten Bären for one night to visit Freiburg and the Christmas markets and were warmly welcomed on our arrival at the hotel. The staff went out of their way to help us find somewhere to park in the city centre as it was a busy weekend and all the car parks were full. Our room was... More

Upsides: Freiburg's a lovely city. This hotel's well-located within the old town. Most sights are within walking distance and the tram will get you further afield. Plenty of good restaurants and bars down atmospheric side streets. The hotel staff are enthusiastic and the restaurant has good food and service. Downsides: Clearly there's a range of rooms here. I was here... More

I stayed at Zum Roten Bären for one week. The location is perfect, at the heart of historical downtown Freiburg, with excellent connections to public transportation (Tram line 1 in front of the Hotel, and all other Tram lines within 300 meters). The hotel truly is a Gem. The oldest hotel or (Gasthaus) in Germany, it conserves its style dating... More

The nearest airport is about an hour away (Basel-Mullhouse-Freiburg). Zum Roten Baeren literally means "for red bear" and certainly the motif is consistent, from the landbark gold bear at the doorstep, to the lobby, your room keyholder, the carpet in the hallways, the dining area's backrest, even the butter's shape. The conference organizers swear by the hotel being the oldest... More
