Very clean family room with plenty of space.
Free on-site car parking
Very pleasant staff
Free breakfast

Room for improvement
The pillows!!! Worst pillows I’ve ever slept on. There is practically no filling in them and when you put your head on them, what is in there goes either side of your head.

Beds, way too hard. I know everyone is different when it comes to bed firmness but combined with the poor pillow, I was aching after the little amount of sleep I had.

Towels. Whilst the bathroom is a reasonable size the towels are not. I’m quite small and they just wrapped around me!! And if you have long hair to dry, there is no way they will cover it. But the water is hot and has a good pressure in the shower.

We would stay again if we came but would bring our own pillows

Nice hotel at quite area. Yet not too far from City Centre. Friendly Staff. Free internet at all areas but needs boosting at some weak signal spots. Free parking is available on site. Nice breakfast. Country style hotel. Location of hotel within easy reach to major Highway links.

After staying at the Schwaer's Loewen for the third time in the past 6 months, we feel it really could use an improvement in attitude as well as equipment. The rooms lack a basic refrigerator and are only basic in furniture. There are no mirrors in the room where you can do your hair or put on makeup, only the bath area. The hotel staff appears to only tolerate customers, and this is true of the breakfast buffet staff as well.
When we came to breakfast an hour before it ended, we found many dishes already empty. They did not replenish them. When we asked for some of the foods, we were made to feel it was an imposition. We asked for bacon (for three persons) and the lady brought us 2 strips! We then asked her to bring enough for everyone and not just one person!
We last booked "the last room available" and had to pay 35 euros more for 1 night. We got a sofa under a sloping roof, which you couldn't sit in because of the ceiling. That's what the room had over the normal "standard" rooms we had been booking in the past.
Glad we won't be needing to do overnight visits there any more. Would definitely look for another place!

The sweetest, friendliest, and quaintest hotel in Freiburg. It’s nestled in a residential community right on the bus route. Older and no frills hotel but clean, quiet, and well maintained. The staff is helpful and friendly. A special shout out to Niels Eggers. Niels had been an exchange student in Utah not far from my home. Niels treated me like an old friend. This was my second stay and I’ll stay here every time I visit.

Spent 2 nights in this hotel as part of a family road trip. We're a well travelled family and have stayed in hotels all over the world. Having stayed in Hotel Loewen, the family has now unanimously voted it the worst hotel of them all.

Marketing this hotel as 4 star is frankly misrepresentation, in fact it is really a 2 star. The decor and facilities are very tired. The rooms have no air conditioning, which in the 36 Celsius heat made the room even more uncomfortable. The bathroom was small and smelly. Where the grout on the shower tiles wasn't falling out, it was mildewed. The shower head nozzles were covered with scum. No refrigerator. No hangers in the wardrobe. Wifi is not throughout all areas in the hotel, as advertised; needed to sit in the corridor under the router to get a signal.

Breakfast 'buffet' was poor and food hygiene processes dubious (cold meats, etc, just left out on uncooled platters).

The straw which broke the camel's back was returning to the room at 9 pm with a tired family after a long day out to find that housekeeping had not touched our room! Had to go down to reception to get towels. Receptionist seemed less than surprised and was non-apologetic.

Based on the above factors, refused to pay the full bill. Will not be returning to this hotel, and strongly recommend others give it a wide berth!

Extremely basic-clean spacious room but the only amenities in the room were a bottle of water and soap in the bathroom. We arrived on a hot day and our room did not have an AC or even a fan, so we slept with the windows wide open to be woken by traffic and then the smell of people smoking in the allocated smoking area just beneath our room. The breakfast was nice and the staff was pleasant but it was not a relaxing stay. I doubt we will return.

I would love absolutely love it, if I came back to visit and found there had been so many American tourists, that they added an American Flag to the poles across the front of the hotel. America, you'll love this hotel. Parking. Strong Wifi in the rooms. Our room had a big bed, a couch, desk area and a fantastic outdoor terrace with chairs and table. It was too cold to spend much time out there on a dark and stormy night - but the idea of sitting there with family was very pleasing.
The bathroom served me well - can't call it fancy.
Dinner in the downstairs restaurant was my joy. I do not speak German so I went with the special of the night - it looked like I might be getting some meat and potato and apple something - and I ordered the deal of the century. Wonderful pork with a fantastic apple sauce and vegetables, a starter salad and a terrific dessert and my beer. Well, when faced with which beer would you like in German - one goes with the House beer....well played.
Breakfast was another wonderful treat. You know those biscotti you sometimes get with an espresso, that has a gingerbread sort of flavor? Well, Hotel Loewen serves a peanut butter with that same gingery flavor....which went well on all their baked goods. Nice spread of breakfast meats and cheeses.
I look forward to a return visit - and thank you for putting the electrical sockets where we could recharge without a series of yoga and pilates moves.
Oh - but - the Hotel Loewen also goes by Hotel Schwars Lowen Freiburg and more - so use the street address and pay attention when your GPS says it's on the left and means on the right. You can easily drive by if not for the flags!

I stayed at the Schwaers Loewen with a friend over New Year 2013/2014.

Two things let this hotel down, and they let it down badly. The first is the approach, the entrance and the common areas. It is not acceptable in a hotel with advertises itself as four star to have shabby tables outside the entrance which itself is old and dated, and cracked glass in the window of a door on the third floor. In fairness, the hotel started to up-date the main entrance as we left in early January, but it will need more than this to make all of these areas acceptable.

The second thing which let this hotel down was the standard of the food. The breakfast was a poor experience with various things often running out and not being replenished. The standard generally was very basic. Although breakfast is advertised as continuing until 10.00, there was little food and drink left after 09.00.

The evening meals were also of a poor standard. For the demi-pension meal, the starter was always soup which consisted of a clear stock and flavourless noodles. The main course was as unimaginative as an airline salad. One evening this consisted of two small pieces of dry meat, some kind of creamed potato, and a small spoon-full of gravy-like liquid. For New year's Eve we had paid €68 each for a dinner dance. The food that evening was so appalling that we decided not to eat in the hotel the following evening, our last night there.

I have been travelling in Germany since 1964 and this was the worst food I have ever had in a hotel.
This is all a great shame. The location of the hotel is good, and it is easy to get there on public transport. The rooms are also plain but comfortable. The bathrooms could do with some up-dating and the towels are wafer-thin. However, the staff were very pleasant and seemed to work very hard. Possibly there were too few of them, especially at times in the restaurant. The rooms were also clean and the beds comfortable.

We were on the second floor and the best part of the room was the small terrace outside with a sliding door entrance. The room had a small fridge that we couldn't get to cool down. Pleasant staff and free parking.

Lots to say; we booke a week through booking.com and cancelled as it was much economicall to book through the hotel directly. Arrived on a Sunday, we were not informed verbally the restaurant was closed that evening. Nor were we informed it was closed the following evening either; we found out the hard way at 7.30pm. Monday closed. Why? The cook worked over the Easter period! Room 103 for just one night, because of the fighting, running, jumping etc in the room directly above and they too flooded their bathroom and so the water came through the ceiling of our room. We ate in the restaurant one night. The printed menu was old, tired and had no variation, I guess in the last six months. Breakfasts were the same, four sausages were in the tray, Monday and Tuesday morning, The bacon had been bolied in water and wass still in water at 8am. Eggs cooked before 7am were stone cold at 8am. Jams in pre-packed packages. Flooded car park. This place needs some TLC. The reception area was dead, devoid of noise, no gentle music. A little music too would have helped in the dining area. No TV paper for the new week, TV volumn was fixed very low so we had to sit almost on top of the TV to hear it. I have said all that but the room was lovely, beds comfortable. Mini bar empty and you could not but things in to keep cold. It did not work like that and the young lady receptionist would not come to the room to show us how it worked even though I asked here twice. Public transport opposite the hotel is ideal into Freiburg
