This historic, privately run hotel in Freiburg’s old quarter is located in the heart of the pedestrian area, directly opposite the famous cathedral. It serves delicious regional cuisine. The Hotel Oberkirch provides traditionally designed rooms with en-suite facilities.A colourful range of shops, cafés and restaurants are just a short stroll away.Treat yourself to seasonal delights and Baden specialities in the Oberkirch’s widely appreciated restaurant. Make sure to try the local wines on offer.
Hotel Oberkirch is a charming, old school, classic German hotel in the middle of the old town. Had a corner room in the back building overlooking the very pretty, cobblestoned alley way. Although relatively small, the room was so serene and nicely decorated -- complete with parquet floor, wallpaper, and wooden bed -- I was totally enchanted. If you stay here, which I highly recommend, do not miss eating dinner at the restaurant, which is located in a different building, on the cathedral square. Had an absolutely superb dinner of venison, spaetzle, and red cabbage. And the staff at both the hotel and restaurant were lovely, helpful, and enthusiastic. Don't miss staying here!

We had a pleasant stay at the hotel in Freiburg, which is a lovely town. The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of the old town. Its an old building with a lot of authentic charm but it was quite tricky to find the main reception entrance as it is down an alley and in another street at the back from the stated location (which is actually the restaurant rather than the hotel). Be aware that it is in a cobbled pedestrianised area so not so good if you are not mobile on foot or have a car. Also it is right on the Munsterplatz so be ready for the daily market outside in the square and you'll have church bells chiming on the hour and for services. The room was well equipped and a very comfortable bed, enabling a good sleep. If you book direct as we did you can select your precise room which is good, especially given that they vary a lot, it being an old building. Housekeeping was done on a request what you want basis - they'll service your room or not as you prefer and the staff were happy to check in with you about what you needed. The only downside in the room was that it was not airconditioned (it being an old building) and ventilation was an issue as it was quite warm. If there is hot weather then the room could easily become quite stifling. We slept with a fan on and the window open and it was ok - only then we had the bells from the minster :) The hotel doesn't have a lounge or bar in the main building. But it has an excellent restaurant in a separate building around the corner on the square. And there are plenty of other bars and restaurants nearby. We had a great stay. One final point, we didn't see many staff - there was someone on reception during the day but not 24 hours. There is an access code system so when we arrived in the evening we had received a code to get into the building and our room keys were waiting for us to get into our room. It all worked fine so was no problem but was a bit unusual.…

We stayed there since we wanted to get o freiburish flavor while in the city. we had a car and it was truly difficult to park around. Basically no help from the reception people, who were actually quite rude. If you have a car ask them in advance where to park etc and be ready to carry your luggage in cobblestone streets…The room was truly small and had no air onditioning whatsoever, a true burden considering we had 35 degrees celsius outside. We had to leave the windows opened, which was not of big help. Other than that, leaving the window opened led to no accustic block and we had the in front cathedral bell ringing all day. Breakfast was mediocre and the restaurant staff was of no help. Try to find another place yo stay while in Freiburg.

Response from Matthias Pohlmann, Gästeservice/Empfang at Hotel Oberkirch
Responded Jul 12, 2023
Thank you for your review and for the important advise about contacting us in advance when arriving by car. Because of our location in the pedestrian zone in Freiburg we ask our guests in basically every communication to contact us about directions and offer directions as a download in four languages on our website. Furthermore, we are always communicating that you can drive in front of our hotel - even on the Münsterplatz itself - if you are a guest in our hotel. There are also three parking spots on site available and two public garages very close by. Our reception team offers guidance through the pedestrian zone by telephone and we are proud to be one of the last hotels helping our guests to get their luggage in their room. Due to the fact that our buildings are landmarks - we celebrate 285 years «Oberkirch» this year - we have no option of offering air condition in our rooms - a fact that we also communicate wherever possible. During the summer months we offer fans in the rooms and our housekeeping staff airs the rooms every morning and darkens them as soon as the sun gets intense in order to avoid heating. Much to our regret we take note of the fact that you considered our reception team as rude - even more so as our staff are reviewed with splendid marks otherwise (for example with 9.3/10 on booking.com at the time of this answer). The very same room you have stayed in was only recently described as large from a family with two children. Therefore we consider the sense of size of a room something very personal and advise to check our website, where each room is presented with its size in square meters. We are also happy to advise our guests by telephone about the best fit for their needs. Your review about the breakfast came to us as a surprise - especially given the fact that during the week of your stay you've never made any requests to the breakfast team and especially recently we get very favourable reviews about our breakfast. We pride our emphasis on service especially given the restrictions caused by the historic building and the pedestrian zone and it saddens us that apparently your experience was not living up to your expectations. As our aim is to get better every day we also contact each guest directly about his or her experience asking for specific points where we can improve the «Oberkirch experience», which we still hope you will answer us.

A very nice hotel directly in the center of the old city. It was a small project to get into the hotel with my car, but we found the way. They have parking service at the hotel. The hotel is old, but the quality of the hotel is very good. The room was big enough for us (3 persons), but we missed air-condition since we had over 35 degrees Celsius the time we stayed there. The hotel has a restaurant in the basement directly on the big city placa, which was open for breakfast and for dinner later in the evening. The atmosphere in the hotel and restaurant are fantastic. Free wifi at the hotel, but no minibar.

Hotel Oberkirch is located across the market square from Freiburg's Münster. From one door to another in under a minute. Rooms in main building offer commanding views of the Münster and outdoor market place. The restaurant is excellent for breakfast lunch and dinner. Hotel Oberkirch is modern while not losing the traditional Freiburg Im Breisgau style.

I am still in the reservation step and already regrating. Over email and telephone, I am dealing with very rude and unfriendly staff personel. It is a bussiness trip like many others I do during the year, in Germany, and I have never seen something like this. I am going on with the reservation at this hotel only - and really only- because all the paperwork at my company was done already and would be extremelly bureocratical to change.

The hotel and restaurant are, for lack of a better word, traditionally decorated. The room was immaculate. The cathedral bells are very loud. And so are the occasional revelers. Thankfully there are ear plugs on the night stand. (Some rooms are on the square, others are on the street opposite.) The breakfast was delicious and the restaurant charming. The restaurant staff were attentive and friendly. (I don't have special needs and eat everything.) Hotel and restaurant staff speak English rather well. The hotel staff went above and beyond the call of duty in helping out with storm related travel changes. Well done!

The rooms are very clean and spacious. The atmosphere is old-fashioned at its best. The service is extremely friendly and very attentive, at reception, at breakfast (sumptuous and good choice of fresh food) and in the restaurant. The situation is just perfect, right opposite of the Munster, a 15 minutes stroll from the main train station.

Very good service; lovely rooms; good breakfast, fabulous location on the market square outside the cathedral. Worth the splurge to stay in that part of the Hotel. (The main part is a block away, and still quite nice.)

By car it was a touch difficult to find in the dark, but we finally managed. They have limited parking and it was well worth the price after seeing where the public parking was. Excellent service, great location and yummy breakfast.
