We have stayed at the Grauer Wolf hotel twice, it is very comfortable and we felt well looked after. The rooms have recently been modernised. We also enjoyed the breakfast buffet. It is situated very close to the centre of Erlangen and there are many good places to eat nearby

The hotel has a small car park at the rear which is very handy.
The room we had was practically a suit. We may have been lucky on this front! Our room was in the annexe over a small car park courtyard from the main hotel. The room was huge giving lots of space to really spread out. The cleanliness of the room could not be faulted.
The staff were polite and friendly.
Breakfast was great with a good selection of fresh foods on offer. The main breakfast room was a bit small, so on one morning we had to eat in a second dinning room just over the corridor from the main room. This meant a bit of ferrying of food to our table.
The hotel is in the centre of town and a great location.
Erlangen is just 20 mins or so car or train ride from Nuremberg.

Stayed here for a complete week while visiting/working at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Was recommended by to stay in the city center as it was close to shops, restaurants and along a bus route direct to the university (approx. 20mins by bus).
Was happy with the stay and had no major problems to speak of. The room was in the converted(?) building across the courtyard and was clean and spacious. Continental breakfast in the morning was also very nice and there was a large choice.
Some of the minor issues I had were that I wasn't told that the reception and front door was completely closed at 10pm, so arriving back after 10pm on my first night I was a bit panicked to find it shut and there was no answer from the emergency contact phone for about 1hr. I was finally informed that I could gain access to the hotel using a code or keycard (which I hadn't been provided with at check-in) or using my room key to unlock the main door to the second building from the street behind the hotel (again I was never told at check-in). Also, I was staying at the hotel during very warm weather and unfortunately there was no air-conditioning and the refrigerator in the room didn't work.

Very friendly (and English speaking) staff and a good location for central Erlangen, although parking can be a pain.

The rooms are very basic, I basically had a twin bed with two thick duvets (in summer, and no aircon) and an old TV. The bathroom was ok - at least the shower was reasonable, although it ran out of hot water the first shower I had. Pack some shower gel / soap as the stuff provided is the most watery stuff I've ever tried, it might even have been water!

Free internet is provided, although I never managed to connect which was very frustrating as I was travelling for work. A colleague I was staying with told me he'd managed to connect on a previous visit but not this time so I suppose it depends on the room location.

Breakfast was typical German fare - bread, cereal, fruit, cold meats and sausages. (I'm vegetarian so I just had toast as usual in Germany).

My biggest complaint really was the noise - my room faced onto the main street and as I had to have the window open since it was so warm it was really noisy. Kids shouting at 1:30am as they left the bars and I was woken up at 4:30am by a group of kids drag racing up and down the main street. Strange as Erlangen is generally a very nice town.

I wanted to increase my rating as the staff were really nice but there are better hotels in the area with better facilities, so 2 stars.

The other reviews on this site (in German) scared me a bit, but the hotel really isn't so bad.

The Pros:
The location is excellent; virtually everything in Erlangen is within walking distance.
The rooms are clean and reasonably spacious.
Breakfast is above average, with various cold choices, including the standard rolls and cheese, but also smoked fish, various yoghurts, and fresh fruit. It doesn't change from day to day, however, so after a while it gets a bit boring.
Wireless internet is free and works without any problems whatsoever.
The staff is cordial and helpful.

The Cons:
The beds are laughably uncomfortable. Even though I was a solo traveler, I was put in a room with two single beds that could hardly have been three feet across.
The walls are very thin. You can hear everything on the street and in the inner courtyard, and at times the noise woke me up in the middle of the night. One time, some kind of alarm went off at 4:30 in the morning, and didn't stop until after 6. People stay out late in Erlangen, so be prepared to hear some drunken carousers.
The hotel, including the front desk, closes at 10 P.M. You can still get in with your key, but I'm not even sure of what you're supposed to do if there's an emergency.

We spent 2 nights here, in 3-bed rooms. Rooms were quite ok, breakfast was good. Service was quite good too. Parking was in the courtyard, about 8 euros per night, it was rather difficult to get in the courtyard with a big van. rather good location, short walk to everywhere. good place to stay if you are on foot or with bicycles, parking spots are difficult to find.

I reserved this hotel because the hotels in Nuremberg were fully booked, I'm happy I decided to find this sweet little town. The hotel is going through some construction and updating. My room was in the back building and I had to leave the lobby and cross a parking lot to access. The room was HUGE and the bathroom shower was amazing. The downside was the location of the room was the first floor right on the street with construction immediately outside my window and meeting spot for people leaving the pub across the street. The curtains were sheer and the secondary curtains did not cover the entire window for privacy while dressing(picture attached).
The hotel breakfast had a very large variety of choices and was a nice option in the morning.
As a warning at 7am promptly the church bells ring for 7 mins. I personally loved this but i can see how it may be distracting for others.

Answer from Therese L
Erlangen, Bayern, Germany
Dear Sir, the Grauer Wolf Hotel is in about 8 to 10 minutes walking distance to the Erlangen railway station. When leaving the station you are heading north into Goethestrasse. Turn right into Heuwagstrasse and left into Hauptstrasse. If you don´t want ot walk there are taxis and buses - for example line 287 or 286. They are running quite frequently. The ride is 3 minutes. Get off the bus at Martin-Luther-Platz. Looking forward to seeing you in September.
