I had read about this hostel in the blog of a famous journalist who described it as stepping into a time machine back in the DDR time. The area is not the best one and in the end it is and still remains an economical hostel. But the eastern German Style with Retro furniture is just captivating. It was worth... More

Booked this place last minute on the internet the night before we got to Berlin. It's a basic hostel but with private rooms. No kitchen to cook in and shared bathrooms are the major downsides. Our room was clean and spacious and I got a good night's sleep. The DDR "theme" is 70s style wallpaper / furniture but doesn't extend... More

I am not sure if i really felt that famous "DDR spirit"...the hotel is a part of the 1960-70s apartment building, so rooms are actually flats (part of the flats with shared bathrooms). All furniture is original "DDR-made". we had old radio in our room, it worked. Rooms are small and the walls are thin - I heard my neighbours... More

Checked in no problem, got key to room 55 top floor. Private bathroom across hall. Room clean if a bit dated ( deliberate of course ) nice comfortable bed after a hard days sightseeing and climbing those stairs! ( no lift ) lovely bakery on the corner for a cheap substansial breakfast. Good shower.

I booked a private room with a bathroom shared with another room. With this hostel you are never sure if certain flaws are just part of the "GDR-theme" or just them being lazy with upkeep, for example the wallpaper in my room was partially torn off. However, for the rest the place is quiet, sufficiently clean and in particular the... More

If you want somewhere cheap to stay, but don't want to resort to a hostel - this is the place for you. Room was simple and small, but clean and comfortable. I had a private bathroom but it was in a different room in the hall which was slightly inconvenient, but better than not having one. I will note that... More

I needed somewhere cheap for a 2-week working stay in Berlin and wanted to avoid sharing a room on AirBnB or in a dorm so that I had privacy. It's 1970/80s(?) GDR-theme is amusing at first but a novelty only for a few days. Single room was small and basic but had private bathroom. Bed was surprisingly comfy and wifi... More

Save your money and go to a decent place. I stayed here as I thought it would be unique and fun. I paid 48 euros a night for a room with a shared toilet. I stayed 2 days no cleaners showed up on the saturday at all and didn't touch the toilet. It was looking rough around midday but by... More

What a great stay - Ostel is in a perfect location - the suburb its in its pretty cool, lots of little eaters for brunch, its like a 2 minute walk from the train station, round the corner from Berghain, Berlin Wall is just down the road......the hotel itself was fab, decor so cute and different - it is old... This hotel is a curious concept, a bit voyeuristic for those coming from outside the old Communist block, a bit nostalgic for those that are. It's relatively inexpensive, but be prepared to pay cash for the room - something that isn't mentioned before you check in. The decor is the reason you're here and that's ok. Rooms are fairly sparse,... More

Staying in Friedrichshain

Neighbourhood Profile
When you arrive at Warschauer Strasse in the heart of the district, you have found one of Berlin’s party hotspots. At night in Friedrichshain, the energy is palpable and the streets of this old worker's quarter are full of street musicians. On one hand, you may find a bar with international crowds, electronic music, long lines and panoramic views - on the other, an outside venue by old train yards featuring decrepit buildings and live alternative music. No matter your taste, the best way to end a night out in Friedrichshain is sitting by the Spree River at the East side gallery, the longest and best preserved piece of the Berlin Wall, watching the sun rise over the beautiful Oberbaum Bridge.
