Fantastic Hotel with nice British Design clues, a great Restaurant and Fantasti Rooftop Bar overlooking the Alster Lake with great views of downtown. My room had a nice terrace with lake views. Ample parking in the large Garage.
Hotel staff was super friendly and helpful. Room was just right. Parking was very convenient, but pricey. We love the surrounding area. Ma y restaurants to choose from as well as a few just around the corner on the Alster. The street side rooms are a bit loud from the latenight gatherings, but not from traffic. The rooftop lounge while boosting one of 5he best views in Hamburg is a bit overrated and pricey. The George is our new favorite when visiting Hamburg.
Already when you enter you get the sense of luxury at The George. Great beautiful and homely design with sense for the details. Your calm down and feel assured you are going to relax here. The service is welcoming and helpful. The rooms live up to the experience in the hall/reception. Not just basic, but with an eye for what gives a better and more relaxing "home away from home" stay. We had heard of the famous rooftop, so our first stop was in the sun with the amazing view. Friendly, fun and energetic waiters made sure we were taken care of. But! A big but. The breakfast was an additional (high) fee. I fully understand that corona gives some challenges and a need for new procedures. But there are different ways to handle it. Clearly the breaksfast restaurant at The George had been busy and most of the tables were full of used tableware. The waiters were stressed (and rude). We were just seated without further introduction and left there. The buffet was removed (due to corona) but we were not told what the alternative was. At all! Suddenly a plate with a range of food was placed in front of us. We could see other groups got the same treatment and had the same puzzled look on their faces. All while dirty tableware was stacking up on all the free tables around us and other guests - and wasn't removed for the entire time we spent in the restaurant. It was not until we asked one of the receptionists who came through the restaurant if the plate was really all we got, that we were told that we could have various kind of eggs and such. Nobody told us that. Even refill on coffee was almost impossible to achieve. Again I fully understand corona does that the restaurant has to change thier concept. But if they don't tell the guests what the new concept is, it just leaves the guest with a bad and poor experience. And obviously nobody cared. In addition we were left with a feeling of a hotel/restaurant that doesn't respect the guest but also not the staff. They were clearly understaffed and unhappy, which affected the service we got as paying guests. It is simply not okay. It never is, but especially not at a hotel of this standard. The mood of the staff is often a good indicator of the working environment and what you as a guest is supporting. Still giving four stars - for the hotel. I believe (and hope) the restaurant is supposed to be of better standard and now I know to skip it next time I stay at The George. Because I'll be back - if I can be assured that this hotel takes guests and thier employees serious.…
The hotel is in a walk distance for most of the attractions. Or else you can rent a bike almost outside the hotel from Stadtrad Hamburg. Many restaurants in the area. Just walk to Lange Reihe. Here you find all kind of restaurants. The hotel has an amazing roof top bar and the view is worth a visit it self. If you come by car there is a garage. And it is easy to get to the hotel by car. Staff at the bar and reception are friendly and helpful. We didnt try the breakfast or had dinner at the hotel. Rooms are clran and the bed was really good. We will stay here again next time we visit Hamburg.
The restaurant and bar are worth a visit but I would not stay there again. The room was too warm and I got no assistance regarding this. Even though I had spoken with the staff about this multiple times. Which resulted with me having to sleep with the window open for two night. A window that goes to the street where there seemed to be traffic 24/7. This hotel looks better than it is.
