Anything was alright. The networkplan of the HVV "Schnellverbindungen im Großbereich Hamburg" at the stairs between groundfloor and basement should be changed against a new one that includes the new station Hamburg-Elbbruecken also.

It was a good hostel considering its price, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the reservation process was quick. However, the rooms' beds were uncomfortable and hard to sleep on, and we couldn't sleep during our whole trip.

I came with my 13 ye old son for a 2 night mid-week stay. Great (cheap) deal, so I wasn’t expecting valet service and a red carpet - but I was expecting cleanliness...especially during Corona!! The lobby was packed, it’s was as clean as the main station hall in Hamburg: a busy place with many people from different backgrounds and somebody was probably trying to play a neverending game of catch-up... Reception was friendly and fast - the separating plexiglas dirty. The first room we got assigned was on the 3rd floor, very dark, crammed with bunk and double beds, facing the inner courtyard. It was 6 degrees out, the window was open with its handle broken off and couldn’t be closed. On the table a small pop up sign read: We have disinfected this room for you. Right next to the handprints and grime traces of the previous occupants. Bathrooms were clean - but it was freezing and we asked to change rooms. Second room was on the first floor, facing the (busy thoroughfare) street. A lot brighter and a bit larger so not so crammed. But the mirror was grimy, so were the windows and there was an empty water bottle in the upper bunk next to a propped-up pillow...it looked like one of the staff had had a nap and forgot their bottle... The bathroom was nice and clean. The baths are a good size with good lighting. Shower with a sink, plug, hairdryer and heat rack in the smaller one and the toilet with sink and plug in a separate one beside it. It was convenient for the two of us to use the shower and being able to use the toilet at the same time. The beds were ok, comfortable enough and the tv worked. The location is ok. Close enough to the center and the mai station. We had a car, so no issues. Although I have an e-car and there’s no charging point nearby. I wouldn’t have wanted to have breakfast there. For 10€ you can have a much nicer breakfast anywhere at one of the many coffee shops in town. Hamburg is my hometown and it’s great. The hotel was ok but wouldn’t go back.

This was not very pleasure experience. The core of all the problems is that A&O is partialy a hotel and partialy a hostel. And it takes the worse of both worlds. When we take Hamburg's A&O as a hotel the stay would be absolutely terible. We reserved a room called "family room" with 4 beds – a double bed and a bunk bed. The hotel had had information that we were four in fact and could have supposed we would use all the beds. However when we first entered the room we found out only two beds were made of. There was not even bed linen so we could made of remaining beds ourselves. In the end we had to return to the reception wait the long line and finaly we got the bed linen and an information that in A&O it was a common practice to made of two beds only no matter number of guests. Then we wished to take a breakfast in the morning. Our program in Hamburg was tight so we had to leave the hotel early. So we were pleased to found out a sign declaring the breakfast is served from 6 AM in the work days. However the receptionist recommended us to buy the breakfast only in the morning when we asked him after check-in. This was very good counsel in the end because when we came to the breakfast area at 6.40 we found only a closed door. So in the end A&O announced a breakfast and offered none. This was the hotel part of A&O Hamburg. If we supposed this was a hostel all of this would be acceptable give or take. On the other hand we did not find out such basic hostel facility as a public kitchen in the huge building. There was only some offer of dinner delivery. Well, this does not seem very supposing, but still with all this knowledge I would not have problem to stay in A&O Hamburg once again. It would only be necessary to ask for reamining bed linens (and towels, too) during the check-in and not expecting a breakfast. When we pass these problems there was just one complication – next to the hotel was some facility which produced very loud music until very late night (maybe early morning) and it did not help our children sleeping. What we liked about Hamburg's A&O was the furniture design with industrial motives like protective grilles on the lights.
