We really enjoyed staying at the Schwarzer Baer during our January trip to Wittenberg! First, the one bad thing - no elevator, so getting to our room involved 4 flights of stairs. Other than that we have no complaints. The location is right on the Schlossstrasse, only a few steps from the Schlosskirche (where Luther is buried), the Rathaus, and Luther's Church. Lutherhaus and Melanchthonhaus are about a kilometer away - a great walk in the summer, but we admit to taking a taxi due to the cold! The rooms are spacious by European standards, and the bathrooms excellent. The beds are very comfortable. Our room was right on the street - I can see where this might be a problem during tourist season, what with street noise. Most of the rooms however do not have windows that open onto the front street. The breakfast was wonderful - typically German with outstanding bread, cheese, and cold meats, but there were also some blood sausages and liverwurst (corn flakes available for the faint of heart!) Right below the hotel is the Kartoffelhaus Restaurant, which is a must. There I had the most incredible potato blinis and caviar ever! There isn't a 24 hour desk, but again we didn't find this a problem. Right across the street is the Cafe San Marco, which has great coffee and hot chocolate - especially important if you are crazy enough to travel to Germany in the winter. The Schwarzer Baer was a great experience, and we recommend it.

This is a very tastefully converted historic building on main street of Wittenberg. The rooms are a good size and well appointed. Staff were friendly and efficient and the breakfast was good and plentiful. There is parking at the rear, if needed. The big drawback, to what is essentially a great hotel, is its position. The rooms at the front of the building, as ours was, are above a lively restaurant with outdoor tables. Even during the day the noise was quite disturbing, and there was little chance of an early night.

Pros. I wanted to change my room because I had a shower but need a bathtub. It was very easy took a few seconds. Good location to reach everything. Very friendly staff to my 4 year old as well.
Cons. To expensive for what you get no microwave or fridge. Dirty rug. Also the rooms out front a very loud starting 6.30am. I also couldn't receive phone calls on my phone kind of weird. I paid $70 a night. Breakfast was ok but no fruits like grapes bananas strawberries etc. yoghurt was out after the second breakfast I stated 4. The wifi sucks. I picked this hotel to communicate to my deployed husband but only was able to connect to him once for 3 minutes. The parking really really sucks I only had a parking spot 1 time the rest of the time I had to park outside very inconvenient. I would not stay here again.

Booked this hotel as part of a tour through Europe. Seemed nice and got quite OK reviews.
The good:
Location super. In the middle of Wittenberg, 5 min walking to every major sight. Clean, beds good. Breakfast was good, nice selection.
Not so good:
Finding the hotel by car was almost impossible. Used 3 different GPS, and everyone took us through pedestrian zones nor possible to drive through. The reason was that the hotel has adress on a pedestrian only - street, but entrance is from the back through another street. Nowhere is this mentioned. Receptionist had to agree that many guests have said the same. So - why not give correct driving instructions?
Driving out, there were equally confusing signs. Seems it is not possible to get out without going against either one-way signs or pedestrian zone.
Breakfast ran out quickly, and was not refilled. Parking space was VERY limited. We were lucky to find a spot. Also, no AC in room. When we visited, it was raining at about 20 C, but for a hot summer night - I don´t know.
Otherwise, it was absolutely OK for our visit.

If you like to feel like walking (or sleeping) in history, this is a great place to stay, just off the Wittenberg square. The walls of this historic building could tell stories, especially about their, neighbor Lucas Cranach, the famous painter. The building as bit artfully restored to house this hotel with nice large bedrooms, displaying old hardwood floors and brick walls. With outdoor restaurants in the street to the front, ask for a quiet room in the back. Don't miss the filling German breakfast.

I really can't find anything bad to say about the hotel, so it gets 5 stars. Below are some things we enjoyed about the hotel....but I want to send out a caution about the town: The major churches are not open to visit due to reconstruction. That leaves only one major site in the very small city. We should have arrived later in the day. We arrived early and were left with little to do.
What we liked about hotel:
- parking in the back for free. Pretty easy to find. You can't drive into the old town area, so your only option is to turn left/right down Wallstrasse. Turn left and look for the name of the hotel and turn into driveway. May be cramped if you arrive late.
- front desk staff was very friendly
- hotel has a lift (YAY!)
- room looks like it was recently renovated. Nice rain shower head. Hot water. Beds were comfortable. Only minor thing is that the beds slide around if you lean up against headboard (i.e., trying to sit up in the bed).
- wifi was free and worked well. I was able to Facetime with no problems.
- great restaurant right downstairs
- in the town centre, so you are next to the major sites (see comment above about the sites actually being open right now)
Cons: Really, I can't think of anything that is specific to this hotel (anything is generalized to all continental hotels: square pillows and only 1 english channel on television).

A beautiful place spacious rooms, very clean and modern furniture and beds in an beautiful old building. The hotel was very reasonable priced (70 Euros / double with breakfast) owner or management speaks English. Try the restaurant on the street level. No noise on the street side and the morning breakfast buffet (included) was in a beautiful setting with great service. Will recommend anytime and go back!

Lovely hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our booking included breakfast, which had plenty of choice and was a good quality. The hotel is ideally located on the main street in the town (perfect for sightseeing), and only a stone's throw from the Altstadt train station. Our room was well equipped and spotlessly clean. Would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

I don't think the hotel has A/C. It is an old building but totally renovated. I would be surprised if you even needed A/C, as it rarely gets really hot. We had no problem sleeping, kept the windows open, very quiet and peaceful. We had a room in the back, much quieter. The hotel is located in the pedestrian only area. Rooms in the front of the building are noisier, since bars and restaurants stay open fairly late. A lot of foot traffic.
Enjoy the trip!
