I guess my recommendation is to be prepared for what you will find at the Acron-Wittenberg. The staff is not necessarily friendly or terribly helpful. The free WiFi is virtually nonexistent. Bring your noise-cancelling headphones and sleep mask. Plan to sleep in as little clothing as possible. If you're planning to stay there very long, plan a couple breakfasts away so you can get some variety.
As with all hotels in Wittenberg, and many in Germany and Europe, there is no air conditioning. One must leave the windows open. While it was warm (28 degrees C / 82 degrees F) during my stay, it was dry and everything cooled off in the evening. My room faced the front of the hotel, which is right across from the train tracks. I am a train buff, so watching the various trains go by was fun. However, if the noise from this bothers you, be sure to request a room facing the back of the building.
I had a very nice 4 night stay at the Acron Hotel.
It's a good well priced Hotel, Wittenberg town centre is a five minute walk.
Don't expect The Ritz, but you won't be paying The Ritz prices either.
Wittenberg has to my knowing no real top hotels, but rather a selection between expensive quaint (i.e. worn) old-world hotels in the Old Town, and cheaper you-pay-for-what-you-get hotels outside the Old Town. Acron Hotel belongs to the latter category. It is situated just outsite the old city walls, about 500 meters from the main train station and 20 minute walk to the Castle Church. Luther house is close by with less than 3 minute walk.
The hotel is cheap no-frills one with impersonal rooms and views to street or backyard. Every room has a toilet. The wifi works well when it works (for two nights out of six it did not function). Breakfast selection is sufficient (actually good for a German hotel), but no hot food is served. You have a selection of juices, breads, tee, coffee, cheese and cold cuts, cerals, muesli, eggs, youghurt.
The buffet is catered early the morning but has no refrigeration, so if you go to eat at 10 o'clock the cheese and meats are warm. I observerved bees and flies buzzing around and having their take of the meats. Would not pass hygienic inspection in Finland. Note for the bug-averse: I also encountered two beetles in my bathroom. The hotel should pay more attention to hygiene. Did not get any stomache problems, though.
In sum, the selection of a Wittenberg hotel comes down to two things: Do you want to stay in the old town, walk less and pay more? Or stay outside the old town at Acron or similar, pay half and walk more?
Another thing to consider is that I stayed at Acron during a heat wave. Even though there is no air condition, at Acron you could keep the windows open day and night and it was much cooler than around the town centre. In the town centre you have people and cars going around all the time. At Acron there is a noisy train passing the hotel once an hour, also during the night. I was aware of this beforehand so I had earplugs. I paid around 300 euros for the whole week, slept well, and enjoyed the walk to the twon in the mornings. I could have stayed at the town center for double-triple prize, suffered more heat stress and had a cozier old building. For me the Acron clearly came at the top.
But really: as a popular turist location, Wittenberg would need a smart chain hotel with air-conditioned rooms and a good breakfast. Even if you like a historical properties, the cozy evironment rarely outsets staying at a 25-30 C temperature room with windows open to noisy streets for a couple of nights.
"Although it won't help much (according to the others with whom we traveled), ask for a room AWAY from the train and street."Read full review
