The Espana is situated in a convenient location next to the opera house and right by the Liceu metro station. The staff was courteous and responsive. The optics of the public areas are pleasing. The room was on the small side but not unexpected based on research. Room cleaning was spotty and we did hear humming machinery from the room...

We checked in on a Saturday afternoon and were helped quickly and efficiently. We took our own bags up to our second-floor room in one of two tiny elevators. There is also an elegant staircase from the lobby, which works better if you are coming down and without luggage. Our room was long and narrow. It was certainly spacious enough...

Our room was lovely, on the smaller side but not bad for a city hotel. Location is fantastic - right off La Ramblas with loads of cafes, restaurants and people watching. An easy walk to the port, Palau Guell, the Cathedral, Picasso Museum, Place de Catalunya and Barri Gotic. Metro entrance half a block away. Recommend getting the breakfast plan...

We went to see an opera, Liceu is next door, had huge G&T in Arnau Bar. Rooms comfy. Friends had left their passports. As I'm a regular client they were allowed to check in. We had a great time. Went to Carlotta Akenya for eats after the show. Breakfast was fine.

The hotel is right in the centre of the city, on the border of the gothic quarter. La Rambla is right there, but Keep going, it is fairly horrible. The hotel is one of the oldest in the city but has had a recent sympathetic refit is is now rather stunning inside. The Mermaid Salon where you get a very...

We spent 4 nights at hotel Espana. Quiet nice sized rooms with nice bath. Great location with easy walk to harbor, La Ramba, Picasso museum, fun walk to La Sagrada Familia, and desk staff Very helpful. We'd definitely return.

Excellent location (in quiet area just next to the Ramblas street), high-standard in good price, unique architecture of the hotel and great, very helpful stuff (especially we are very grateful to TOM for numerous advice and to JORDI for probably the best "check in trip" ever). These factors made our visit in Barcelona memorable and magnificent. I could definately reccommend...

The architecture of this hotel is outstanding. The rooms are lovely and well maintained. The staff was warm, welcoming and very helpful. We especially appreciated the efforts of Jordi and Jordi who both worked at the front desk and were always available to help us with any questions we had. The hotel is in an ideal location, just steps away...

We stayed here 4 nights in a boutique room. Hotel interiors are absolutely beautiful and it has an excellent location just couple of minutes from La Rambla. Room was nice but the interior did not quite fit the level of the hotel's public areas. Bed was the best I have ever slept in any hotel, same goes with the shower,...

This hotel was perfect. It is located right off of Las Ramblas in a cute little alley. It is close to the subway and just all around convenient. You cannot hear the hustle and bustle of the city at night. It is clean and comfortable and the service was attentive and friendly. Jordi helped us on our very first day...

Staying in El Raval

Neighbourhood Profile
El Raval
Once a downtrodden corner of downtown Barcelona, this gritty area has seen a cultural resurgence boasting an excellent nightlife and one of the most multi ethnic spots in the entire city. A sense of humble authenticity protrudes from the many independent record stores, second hand shops, and student bars that seem to light up the streets day and night. The rocking epicenter, the MACBA Plaça, is a modern day forum for bohemian youth, abuzz with the sights and sounds of late-night gatherings and talented skateboarders showing off their latest tricks.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The 4 Star Superior Hotel Espana is located in the heart of Barcelona's historic centre, adjacent to La Rambla, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Gothic Quarter. Opened in 1859, it was later renovated by the celebrated modernist architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner. The hotel has always been considered a little gem of Barcelona modernism. Completely renovated in 2010, it combines modern interior design with the classicism of a nineteenth century building. The hotel's restaurant service is under the management of the chef Martin Berasategui. ... more   less
