Hotel España Ramblas boasts a prime location near Las Ramblas that travelers find incredibly convenient, yet a handful have raised safety concerns. The hotel's unique fusion of historic and contemporary design contributes to a serene yet culturally immersive atmosphere, though dim lighting has been flagged by some guests. While the rooms receive mixed reviews for their comfort, size, and ventilation, cleanliness generally earns high marks, with thoughtful touches like robes and slippers.
Service is friendly, albeit with some communication hiccups. Regarding value, opinions are divided, with praise for pricing and breakfast, but criticism over additional costs and room issues.

Detailed Reviews
An interesting period hotel (c 1900): well maintained and clean. Our room was a good size and was modern and well appointed. We didn’t interact much with the staff, but found them all friendly, polite and helpful. I can’t comment on the number of television channels available as I don’t visit Barcelona to stay in and watch television 😀. The only very minor downside was that there was no hot water one morning.
I can’t understand some of the comments about the location - it’s in a fairly typical street; it didn’t seem particularly scruffy and there were no doubtful looking characters hanging around. The street is quiet and it’s only about 100 metres from La Rambla and one probably couldn’t hope for better at a sensible price. We didn’t try the breakfast, preferring to go to La Boqueria (which is very close) and graze on the infinite variety of foods available there. I would certainly stay there again and would recommend it.

This hotel is located right behind the Liceu Opera House, about 100 meters off La Rambla. It's just far enough from the action to be relatively quiet at night, but you can be on La Rambla (and the Liceu metro station) in 3 minutes walk. Cross La Rambla and your in the Old City, easy walk to most of the most popular landmarks, turn right on La Rambla for a 10 minute walk and you're at the waterfront.
The hotel itself is an old building, upgraded but a little worn. Rooms are small, but everything is very clean and the entire staff is absolutely top drawer. I would recommend including breakfast in your room rate (the buffet is very good, and hot dishes prepared-to-order are included). Would also recommend asking for a courtyard-facing room in the interest of quiet nights. Everyone we met was friendly, helpful, and efficient.

Located in the gothic quarter, this hotel is close to Las Ramblas and many famous sites, but takes some getting into by car/taxi. Our rooms (we stayed there twice) were very comfortable, but small - we were challenged to place our two big suitcases out of the way. However, we liked the walk in shower (with a small entry step), twin basins, and there was adequate wardrobe storage, and blockout curtains. No view to speak of, but it is the old quarter. Despite being in a very busy area, our room was very quiet, and breakfast was great. Overall a very positive experience.

Dear Sarah, Thank you for sharing this feedback about your recent stay. We are delighted that you appreciated the modern amenities of our hotel, the walk-in shower with twin basins, the ample wardrobe storage, and our blockout curtains. It is great that you also found peace and tranquility in your room amidst the lively surroundings of the Gothic Quarter. However, we regret that the size of the room posed a challenge in terms of accommodating your luggage. Our hotel, nestled in a historic building, offers a variety of room sizes and we strive to provide clear information on our website to help guests choose the best option for their needs. We understand the importance of comfort and space while travelling and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Nonetheless, it is wonderful that you enjoyed our excellent location close to Las Ramblas and many famous sites. We are pleased to hear that you had a great overall experience with us, highlighted by our quiet rooms and the delightful breakfast offerings that made your stay a positive one. The satisfaction of our guests is our top priority, and we are glad that these aspects contributed to a memorable visit. We look forward to the pleasure of seeing you again. Best regards, Thais F., General Manager

The good:
Beautiful architecture
Good sized room for 3 people
Breakfast room staff very friendly
The bad:
One of the beds was a pull-out with basically very little cushion. I rotated with my daughter over our 6 night stay. My take is the hotel should offer a lower rate for the 3rd person when they can only offer a pretend bed
Inconsistent housekeeping, either no toilet paper or shower floor towel or tissue paper and generally poor attitude if we weren’t ready for the housekeeper to enter our room
Front desk and too bad I didn’t get his name but he is bald. I asked for a bandage one day and he just kind of tossed it as opposed to just handing it to me.
Reason I will not come back or recommend to anyone:
When we arrived we were given an extra small room, shocking really for 3 people, but my wife called and Tibby advised a mistake had been made and we were given a bigger room but it was facing the street. For one I can’t help feeling the front desk was trying to get away with something. The amount of noise coming from the street and alley with groups of homeless directly opposite the front door was endless, I didn’t normally fall asleep until well past 2 am which should not be anyones idea of a relaxing vacation.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your review. We are delighted that you appreciated the beautiful architecture of our hotel and that the spaciousness of your room provided comfort for your family. It is also great to hear that our breakfast room staff made a positive impression with their friendliness. However, we are sorry to hear about the discomfort you experienced with one of the beds in your room. We understand the importance of a good night's rest, especially while on vacation, and regret that we fell short in this area. We regret that the initial room provided was not adequate for the number of guests and apologize for any inconvenience caused by the noise you experienced from the street. Moreover, we extend our apologies for the inconsistencies you encountered with our housekeeping service. We truly value your comfort and satisfaction, and we will follow up on this with our team. Regarding the interaction at the front desk, we are reviewing your comments to ensure our usual high standards going forward. As a city-center hotel next to the vibrant Ramblas, our location is usually one of the highlights for our guests, offering ease of access to many of Barcelona’s attractions and transport options. We hope to welcome you back. Best wishes, Thais F., General Manager

The hotel is located in a strategic position, in a side street in the center of the Rambla, very close to the Boqueria, a few steps on foot from the Liceu metro station. The structure is very beautiful and well-kept but the room had some serious flaws: small size, the wardrobe is in the bathroom, there is no shelf for luggage (we put everything on the desk), there are no coat hangers so it is not Possible to hang jackets, bags etc. , the TV includes the 3 Rai channels but they are very noisy. Same thing in the bathroom, there are no clothes hangers, so you get out of the shower and you can't take the bathrobe which inevitably remains in the wardrobe, as there is no way to hang it. Inconceivable for a 4 star. Average breakfast, no soy milk. Luckily I found an offer through the apps that allowed me to save, because the full price offered is embarrassing for what it offers. I wouldn't go back

The location is perfect in Rambla area and everything is within its vicinity which i would give a plus point. Staff are friendly but the concern here that most of them do not know english and struggle to communicate. We had booked 5 rooms with our group and all the rooms except the one which we got on the 5th / top floor were too small though clean. Views are not that good from the top floor rooms and even from their roof top bar... Our main concern was the check in, however we do understand their policy but its surprising that you get your room after 3pm which is not acceptable as you need to check out before midday the following day - in all 4 / 5 star hotels check in time is always 2pm so am wondering how much time do they need to clear the rooms for their incoming guests keeping in mind that one has checked out before 12pm... so you are paying for a 1 night stay but it comes to approx 20 hrs and you pay for 1 day stay...hard to consume this strategy and their policy. Another concern was the breakfast as for us vegetarians there was nothing apart from fruits and breads...i asked for the hard boiled eggs and the staff at the breakfast room said all are hard and i peeled 2 of them infornt of her and all were broken and watery and she could not help. Being a 4 star hotel, am bit frustrated with their food and beverage department for not catering well for vegetarians and also quality of the boiled eggs... finally i just took some fruits and went outside nearby cafe to have a proper breakfast. Yes hotel is clean and tidy and all amenities are provided except complimentary water was not there may be its expensive for them to provide...and no welcome drinks as well! Anyways the sleep was comfortable and would recommend averagely as in terms of their rates.

Dear Deepak, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. We are pleased that you enjoyed the friendly staff and found our amenities to your satisfaction, including the clean rooms and the quality of sleep you experienced during your stay. Our team strives to ensure that each guest has a comfortable and restful visit. However, we apologize for certain aspects of your stay falling short of your expectations. We understand the importance of communication and regret that you encountered some language barriers with our staff; we are continuously working on improving this aspect to better serve our guests from around the world. Regarding the check-in time, we aim to have rooms ready by 2:00 p.m., and we apologize if there was any delay in your case. We appreciate your patience and understand that waiting can be inconvenient after a journey. We would also like to clarify that our minibars are complimentary, and we regret any oversight if water was not provided in your room. On the matter of breakfast, we offer a wide selection including fresh fruit, detox juices, and a variety of pastries, and we are sorry to hear that our vegetarian options did not meet your expectations. We take note of your comments on this matter seriously as we continually aim to cater to all dietary needs. Furthermore, we regret any disappointment you felt towards the room sizes and views. Nonetheless, we are pleased that you found our central location to be convenient for exploring the vibrant Ramblas area and the surrounding attractions. Our hotel is indeed situated in a prime area that allows guests to experience the best of Barcelona with ease. We hope to welcome you back for another visit. All the best, Thais F., General Manager

The Hotel is in a central location about a block off Las Ramblas so the location is not that safe but ideal because it is central. That is all that it has going for. We encountered numerous problems that made our stay, not an ideal one. These are some of the issues we encountered:
1. On our first night, the shower flooded causing water to spill every where. There was
over an inch of water which we did not realize was flooding.
2. The shower faucet was broken and twisted a finger trying to open and close it
A. The only really nice Hotel staff member with great customer service was Oscar
He changed our room to a similar one. He was always very friendly, genuine
and nice to us when ever we encountered him. (It was a pleasure for us meeting
and speaking with him)
3. Unfortunately the other room also had extremely slow drains so we had to be extra
careful, not to slip and fall in the semi flooded shower.
4. The sinks, if not paying attention, would overflow. Additionally, the smell of mold
would come up from the sinks after use
5. The other issue was television did not work (in the whole hotel) for the 4 nights we
stayed. The response was always (Technician is working on this)
6. We tried their breakfast, and not only was the food and quality very poor but for
the content, expensive
7. For a hotel that advertises as a 4 star hotel, the bed/mattress equates to the
comfort of a hostel. The most uncomfortable bed for we have experienced
8. Fixtures in the room like the vents seemed like they were going to fall off
9. Aside from Oscar, the rest of the Hotel staff do not seem to be happy working
there. And the perception is that they are very unhappy and do not want to be
bothered.
So our advise, is really look for another hotel elsewhere in Barcelona until this hotel can fix these issues and really becomes a 4 Star Hotel.

Dear Eddie, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. We are glad to hear that you appreciated the central location of our establishment, which indeed provides easy access to various attractions in Barcelona. We regret to hear about the issues you experienced with the shower and want to assure you that our maintenance team is dedicated to ensuring all facilities are in proper working order. We are also saddened to hear your comments regarding the room comfort, and while we strive to offer the highest quality with our recent mattresses, it seems we fell short of your expectations. Please know we value your comfort and satisfaction. Additionally, the experience you described with the television service is certainly not reflective of our standards. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused during your stay. We are also sorry to hear that our breakfast did not meet your expectations. We usually receive positive feedback regarding our varied breakfast options, and we regret that this was not your experience. It is disheartening to learn of your perception of our staff, as we pride ourselves on our team's professionalism and dedication to guest service. We will certainly reflect on your comments to ensure our hospitality meets the high standards our guests expect. The kind words you shared about Oscar are greatly appreciated, and we are delighted to know he made a positive impact during your stay. We hope that you will allow us the opportunity of providing you with an improved stay in the future. Best regards, Thais F., General Manager

Hotel Espana has many things going for it. Principal among them are its location & employees.
The location of the hotel is one of its top draws. Just a few feet off the touristy La Rambla street, the access is via a small street which is pedestrian o only with vehicular access limited to some service vehicles only. That makes for very quiet environs for the hotel. The location also means it is right next to the Gothic quarter of the city and access to other touristy attractions is easy. There are multiple good restaurants within walking distance as is the famous food market La Bocqueria.
The employees of the hotel were very impressive with two of them going above & beyond. Marta at the front desk was one of the most impressive in this regard along with her colleague Luis.
The rooms, as is usual in big European cities, we’re small and there was no place to sit in our room apart from the bed. Sliding doors were utilized to save space, with the sliding door between our bathroom & bedroom not working.
The bathroom is unsafe for the older guest or those with limited mobility , with a very high stepping bathtub, no anti-skid treatment of bathtub & no grab-bars, putting them at risk for falls.
The general decor of the hotel is very pleasingly Barcelonian. The morning breakfast was outstanding. They did have a restaurant which is closed Mon & Tuesday. The top floor has a small pool, a bar where one can get some food as well.
I would return to the hotel, if & when they fix the safety issues in the bathroom.

The reservation was made by the travel agency. The Hotel has an interesting history in terms of architecture, it is in the historic center, but it is far from being
4 stars. We arrived from Madrid at 1:30 pm, the reception didn't know the type of room we booked and it wasn't ready. I informed them that I had booked a room with an extra bed. The gentleman at reception informed that they would fix the sofa bed, suitable for the family room. When we went up, the bathroom sinks were blocked and the bathroom light bulb had fallen down. We called maintenance and went for a walk around the city. When we returned, at 10:30 pm, at 8°C, tired and eager to take a shower and rest, the room was not ready. When asking reception, I was informed that there was no longer any maid service. My son's bed needed to be made, he was missing bedclothes and towels. The fallen lamp remained the same. My husband fixed it. I requested a room change. The ones they offered were smaller and also needed to be fixed.
We ended up leaving at midnight to change hotels.
Sad and frustrating experience. I do not recommend.

My daughter and I arrived in June 9, 2023 and were welcomed by a very friendly reception. We were checked in within minutes and were provided a complimentary beverage in the roof top bar, wifi password, maps and restaurant recommendations. The room was lovely and very clean. The room had robes and sleepers, coffee and cold complimentary beverages in the fridge. Would highly recommend this Hotel. 🇨🇦
