I couldn't have been happier with my location in Madrid. This is a comfortable small hotel, not a "hostel" with bunk beds and shared bath like we think it might be. Very clean, but small room with balcony. In a very safe, lively area just off Plaza Mayor, in the heart of the old city. A bit noisy at night,...

My friend and I spent 3 nights after a recommendation. loved it from the moment we walked in. We were welcomed by a very friendly receptionist Daniel who was extremely helpful and had a great sense of humour. Room was spotless and comfortable and had a super balcony for people watching. Location of hostal is superb. So many buzzing restaurants...

I'll write my review in bullet points. First I have to tell you that I have never stayed in a Hostal ever! I did so only as a result of doing my research on a couple of travel sites. I'm an avid traveler and this is one of the best choices of value and location that I have found. Madrid...

We had a wonderful stay at the Macarena. To sum it up, the rooms were small but very clean and quiet; the location was the best. You could walk to the Metro lines and the Royal Palace (Palacio Real) within 10 minutes, and there were numerous restaurants within 5 or 10 minutes. The hosts were very, very nice people; they...

We stayed there for 2 nights. The location is simply excellent. Located 50mts from San Miguel market and Plaza Mayor. Lots of food and shopping options nearby. The rooms are a bit small, but very neat and tidy. Wi-Fi and AC works fine. Ask for front facing rooms if possible since backside rooms dont have a window or is not suitable...

Hostel is clean and value of money. You have La Latina in a walking distance and as well big squares. Walls are too thin and you can hear neighbours when they are talking. There is no breakfast. Room was cosy and big enough for three nights.

Loved staying here and would stay here again in a heartbeat. The good and bad listed below: Good 1. Great location: Close to lovely and beautiful Plaza Mayor, a supermarket, food within walking distance, Plaza del Sol for metro and buses (which ended up working well in addition to the metro), Museo Jamon for cheap quick sandwiches 2. Good price,...

We booked this hostal going back from 6 months in Asia - to have a stop-over before continuing to Malaga. We booked a room for smokers. When we arrived we just wanted to confirm the smoking room, but were told that smoking was on the street! We did not accept this - so we smoked on the balcony as we...

The rooms are not big but for the price in the absolute centre of the city you can't expect anything else, especially at their prices. Out of the door and across the narrow street is one of the entrances to the Plaza Mayor which is a very picturesque place but I wouldn't recommend eating/drinking there - expensive. The Hostal is...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
