Getting there from the airport was a nightmare on the metro as you have to change trains three times just to get to Anton Martin and even then there is a 5 min walk. We were a bit suprised by the entrance of the hostal as it looked very old fashioned with wooden staircases and a old school looking lift...

First of all what was excellent in this hostal: rooms very clean and made up as soon as you go out for breakfast, central position even not easy to reach from airport (anton martin station is quite far away you need to walk ascent), quite street - no noise during the night, help from Ana in booking airport shuttle, 3...

We stayed 5 nights the Hostal Dulcinea and it is a very convenient base for seeing the city as well as taking trips out of town, just a short walk to the Antocha train station and Avis. We took the train to Seville from there and picked up the rental car the same spot for a day trip to Segovia....

Basic pension in central Madrid. We paid 48 euros/night for a double with bathroom - no breakfast. Room was clean but very basic. Owners speak very little English but are very nice. Location is very good for most attractions.

We stayed 2 nights the hotel Dulcinea in the end of May 2004, we had booked the room 2 months in advance using recommendations from this site. The owners Jose and Maria were very nice, the fact that we spoke spanish made our conversations very easy during our stay. They had also given us good recommendations for getting from the...

This hostal is cheap enough by Madrid standards, and pretty clean, but the walls are quite thin -- conversations next door could be easily heard. So easy that it was possible to hear somebody "shhushing" us when we were talking a little too loud one night.

Can't really review the hotel, because as soon as I arrived, without explanation - they took me 2 blocks away to another hostal to stay. I was never told why, as noone spoke any english. I had a reservation, but they told me it didn't matter. The other hostel was ok, but after reading reviews in the guide books that...

Staying in Huertas

Neighbourhood Profile
Huertas
Also known as Barrio de las Letras, Huertas was once home to prominent literary figures, Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega among them. The neighbourhood is committed to celebrating its rich heritage: Calle Huertas itself is inlaid with quotes from celebrated authors, street names pay homage to them, and second-hand bookshops pervade. Huertas receives a fair amount of spillover from the center — side streets around Plaza Santa Ana take on a foreign party atmosphere at night, and you always see young backpackers navigating the streets — but as you descend into the neighbourhood, everything becomes a little more cramped and slightly less refined, and takes on more of an underground feel. Live music is at the heart of Huertas: by night, its subdued bars are ideal for meeting friends, sipping cocktails, and chatting quietly while enjoying jazz or singer-songwriter performances.

“All have A/C. Interior rooms tend to be quieter, unless other guests are particularly selfish. Street rooms have a small balcony but there is some noise from the quiet street. It's about as quiet as you could get this close to the centre of Madrid. I never visit Spain without taking earplugs! Where else in the world do you see traffic jams at 3 in the morning?”
