The staff here was great--even when they didn't speak English, they bent over backwards to help. The rooms are very basic, but completely serviceable. The internet works well, and if you ask, the staff will make every attempt to find you the quietest place they have. The apartments are a real bargain--on the other side of the reception area, up...

Based on other reviews we decided to book for initially a couple of nights. Certainly compared to other Spanish cities such as Seville, Cordoba & Barcelona it was considerably cheaper. Location wise it is brilliant, just around the corner from Sol metro and walking distance to most of the 'must see' sights. Potential to be a bit noisy (but where...

It was a short 4days city tour and we wanted to stay in the centre to have walking distance to the most attractions and be close to metro stations and last but not least in pleasent accomodation. There you are....this hostal met our expectations in 100%.Nice reception hosts, clean room...what else? Aha, next to this hostel you have: 24h little shop...

Staff friendly and respectful. Premises and room all clean and comfortable. Big King-sized bed. I did not try to use the Wi-fi, so I cannot rate that aspect. Hot water available all throughout our stay (April 8-11, 2017); Air conditioner was not available in our room even though advertised. It was explained to us that use of A/C is authorized...

My wife and I stayed for a week. We walked a lot, took the subway, took the RENFE Circaneas, saw lots of museums. It was great! The front-desk staff was very helpful -- with enough English to work with us. There's a 24-hour convenience store adjacent, for milk and quick foods, and a coffee machine in the lobby (1 Euro...

Centrally located at the SOL metro stop, this hostal has access to local cafes, restaurants, bakeries (some open 24 hours--what a concept!) plus outdoor cafes with umbrellas around the plaza, serving tapas and sangria. The Hostal Madrid has very modern touch keys, automatic lights and tastefully decorated to reveal some of the original bricks and mortar. It also has iron...

great place and great people. It is centrally located , very nice ( I didn't think an Hostal could be as nice) excellent cleaning and the people are great. I would like that London's hotels could copy at least something in the management of a small hotel. Rooms are well decorated and furnished enough to spend some days in the...

It is a cheap choice to stay in madrid. Very perfect location, close to metro station and center, bur poor facilities. The wifi was terrible. The hotel didnt offer breakfast. Warm water was not available all day. It also didnt have house keeping, and you should do the room yourself.

We got there a couple hours early and they still let us check in. Not to mention, they upgraded us to an apartment (we had reserved a basic one room)! They were helpful when we asked they about transportation options to Barcelona and gave us a map and advice. The location is also excellent, right next to Plaza Mayor and...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
