Based on the location, by Plaza Mayor, and the friendly staff this could be a great budget hotel. Regrettably it is so rundown and shabby that it turned into quite a disappointment. We stayed in a private twin room for 6 nights in early December. The problem is that clearly nothing had been done to maintain the room for many...

I stayed at Hostal Tijcal since it was the only budget option available when I booked super last minute. Since it was also near Sol, I went for it. This is a hostal (a budget hotel) and not a hostel, so don't expect any place to chill or socialize or a free breakfast. The dorm room and bed were decent....

The hostel is located between Plaza Major and Puerta del Sol, where there is the metro station. Reception opened 24h, kind staff. The cleaning is okey, but my room was really small, and for what I've paid a single room I expected a bigger one. But however, it was good for one night and for my necessities (goos wifi connection),...

Stayed here one night before returning home. We booked a triple room for 59€, so don't expect much. Bathroom run down and very tiny i.e. had to sit on toilet sideways as shower was in the way. Not sure why a shower/ bath was put in such a small room. Obvious mould around shower seals. Had to pay 6€ per...

Ok so I don't typical stay a hostel hotel. My friend booked for the weekend in Madrid to check out the sites around town. It's in the smacked daddy of downtown area. So everything is walking distance which is a plus . If your driving a car don't park near or around this place bc cameras are everywhere and you'll...

Bed is close dirty wall and you afraid to touch with face when you sleep. After complaints staff show me all...

Clean but small rooms. The location was great though so we got to enjoy the nearby cafes and restaurants and bars very much..especially on the night Real Madrid won the Champions League title. The whole city seemed to be awake all night. Would have been great if the rooms were bigger. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Stayed for a long weekend and was very pleasantly surprised. It was clean and comfortable and very central which was fantastic. I would definitely recommend. We were fortunate having a room at the front of the hostel which had a small balcony I understand from other guests that not all rooms were like ours.

Ideal location for Madrid Marathon 2016. Four of us stayed Friday to Monday, compact rooms but very clean. Excellent maid service. Literally minutes away from Plaza Mayor, metro links etc. Our twin bed room was larger than double bed room and had small balcony. Would recommend. 24hr reception. wifi not always working in rooms. To note, hostal on the 3rd...

This is a low budget hotel very well located next to the Plaza Mayor. We have stayed there before but this time we got a surprisingly large and very comfortable room. This place is a bargain and I am always going to stay there when in Madrid.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
