My family and I stayed at Hostel Santillan for 4 nights in Dec '07. I paid 72 euros p/night for a triple room (3 single beds) with ensuite bathroom. The hotel is on the 7th and 8th floors of the buildng and our room was on the 7th floor. It was clean and comfortable. The sheets weren't crisp but clean.... More

I was very pleased with my stay at Hostal Santillan considering what I paid. I stayed in a single room, and since I might be one of the only recent reviewers who has done so, you might want to take note. The room was very small, but was very clean and had what most leisure visitors would need, including a... More

I wasn't familiar with the Madrid concept of the Hostal/Hostel....but since we were traveling with my teen-age children to Spain we were trying to save a Euro or two whenever possible...and the Hostal Santillan was our choice. And indeed it was a correct one. We had a Quad at €88 day (no breakfast) fine room with heating and TV and... More

Spent six days over Easter with a friend sightseeing in and around Madrid, and used Hostal Santillan as a base, having found it by chance on an internet hotel booking site. It is centrally located in Gran Via, and within five minutes walk of at least three metro stations. Santo domingo (on line 2) is probably the closest). Many of... More

I was really dubious about staying here as I was only paying 45 euros per night but the ornate entrance took me by surprise as well as the lift which was so quaint and original! Our room was small but who cares! there was a tv which really helped us with our Spanish. The bathroom was very clean as was... More

Staying in Malasana

Neighbourhood Profile
Hip bars and galleries, independent theaters and music venues, young people with tattoos and funky hair, narrow winding streets — this is Malasaña. Near the center, Plaza Dos de Mayo is a gathering of friends outside bars, dog owners, artists under craft tents, and creative types with notebooks and sketchpads on the plaza’s benches. It may not be as neat and tidy as many other parts of the city, but this only adds to the Malasaña edge. Shops and bars here range from hippie-crunchy to upscale trendy, and on weekends, the streets are bustling around the clock as the nightlife progresses from dinner to bar to disco to late-night food. On the west side of the neighbourhood is the subdistrict called Conde Duque, named after a large pink fort in its center that has been converted into a cultural center for exhibitions and performances. Prettier yet just as edgy, this intimate corner of Malasaña is home to a young international community.
