We stayed here for three nights...the location is perfect for walking to all the old town sights. It's just one minute from Puerto del Sol square, five minutes from Plaza Major. Room was fairly small but had everything we needed, clean with a good shower. Breakfast is in their restaurant (one minute walk away) and plentiful, although can get very...

Less than a block from Plaza de Sol, the Alhambra is a great base for exploring much of Madrid or training to nearby sights. We had suites, which face the street, high ceiling and large and comfortable. Small balcony, where you can survey the endless evening party at the restaurants below with outdoor seating. Walk in shower, with overhead "rain"...

Stayed three nights. Hotel is very central and was always very clean. A bit difficult to find originally but very close to the Sol metro station. The wifi was unfortunately the absolute worst I've experienced in all of Europe so only three stars in my opinion.

Had booked a suite and was not disappointed at all. The room was spacious with a small balcony overlooking the street. The location of the hotel is perfect and the staff is friendly. The breakfast was horrible though.

Booked three nights at this centrally located Hostal. A mere minute's walk from Sol in the very heart of Madrid (and indeed Spain), with great access to public transport and to all the great sightseeing spots. Breakfast was included in the very reasonable price, and consisted of toasted 'rustic' bread with a choice of toppings, and a self serve buffet,...

Alhambra represents top value for money for a short weekend break. Contemporarily decorated, albeit a little dark, smart and clean rooms with a decent 'rainfall' style shower. The breakfasts at a nearby café were good too. It's centrally located to Sur and Plaza Major and has a number of bars and cafes nearby. The rooms may be a little small...

I booked a single room, but they upgraded me for free. Nice room, refurbished, everything you need. Good speedy internet. Friendly staff. Great location in center. I did not have breakfast but it was offered. It could be inconvenient that it was not on site.

My room was newly furnished room. But the building it self was very old. Very dark and little bit of sewege smell. I turned on the heater but took very long time to heat up the room. Staffs were kind and helpful. Breakfast was ok.

The pluses: Excellent location, a minute's walk from the Puerta del Sol, which is the heart of the city and a major metro stop. Friendly, helpful front desk staff, all of whom spoke English. Tastefully designed room with a comfortable bed and large shower. Reasonably priced, and no surprises when it came time to pay. Some room deals include a...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
