There was unpleasant surprise at the very beginning - we were moved into the smallest scrummy studio I've evere seen instead of the cosy two-level appartment with jacuzzi promised by the reservation. It was getting worse and worser: wi-fi was almost dead, hot water ran for 3 minutes only, the whole district was invaded by unfriendly gloomy emigrants, africans proposed...

I booked this apartment through booking.com, feeling happy with my decision as it was a good price and close to the centre. I then made the mistake of going on to tripadvisor and reading the comments. Nearly all of the reviews were bad so we were expecting the worst. But when we got to the hotel the man with the...

I booked this hotel through Hotwire which meant I didn't know what I booked until after the transaction! Then I proceeded to read all the reviews on tripadvisor and swore I would never book through opaque travel sites again! When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised. Yes there is no concierge and you have to book a time to meet...

I booked this property through an opaque travel site, which indicated the neighborhood and the price, but withheld the name and location until I prepaid the reservation. This apartment met my needs for a two night, solo stay in Madrid, but I would have chosen something else if booking directly. I know Madrid very well and am comfortable moving around...

DON’T DO IT! False Advertisement and dangerous neighborhood. This place is a rip-off. Service is nonexistent, the neighborhood is dangerous. Do not waste your time or money. We used Hotwire to book a hotel in center Madrid. We had the misfortune to be assigned to this bad attempt of hotel. Not to mention it is not a hotel as it...

They said it had a balcony. It has NO BALCONY. False advertising. I told them I have a broken ankle yet they put us on the 5th floor with no lift. The apartment looks NOTHING like any of the pictures! The wifi is almost nonexistent and is slower than dialup the 10% of the time that it works. There is...

The apartment's are modern and are in an excellent location. The metro station is a four minute walk away and from there you can get almost anywhere in Madrid. We stayed on a ground apartment so had an upstairs and a basement. As you walk in there's a lounge area and a kitchen with a kettle and fridge. The lounge...

Nice location, close to several metro stations and easy access to Atoche Renfe train station. Grocery store and restaurants literally less than a minute’s walk. The apartment was very clean, communication with the host prior to our arrival was excellent. Hot water and water pressure in the shower were excellent but the shower is tiny, slightly over 2’ wide. Very...

Firstly this in an apartment not a hotel, you are renting the accommodation but there are no hotel facilities such as reception or baggage store. We rented the duplex apartment which you enter from a front door at street level, on arrival an agent is waiting for you outside with your key. You walk straight in to the lounge/ kitchen/...

I stayed here on my vacation recently Nov. 26th -Dec. 2nd 2012 and the apartments are nice but the neighborhood is bad. There are people in the streets all day and all night, fighting screaming and cussing. I wrote a review about it to booking.com but the review did not turn up at the site. My first night was met...

Staying in Lavapies

Neighbourhood Profile
Lavapies
Walking into this neighbourhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighbourhood.

“Do not rent from these people. They are liars and mean about it. They wait till after you book to tell you there is no reception and threaten you if you aren't on time EVEN DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES you will have to wait till it's convenient for them. Unbelievable ! They say there is free wifi but it only works less than 10% of the time and is slower than dialup!”
