The location of this hostal is great because is only one block away from Puerta del Sol and everything is near it... From really early in the morning down to 7pm it was extremely noisy, every single day there was people doing some sort of work below us (it sounded like a carpenter shop) and they were banging stuff so...

We were 4 people staying here for 1 night, the location is very close to Metro Sol but the space of the room was very small and none of the receptionists were speaking English, they couldn't understand what we said and unable to give us any help. We booked breakfast and realized that they cooperate with a local restaurant nearby....

I was desparate when I arrived at the door of the Alaska. exhausted and hungry. The bar was full of people speaking a foreign language I could not understand (not Spanish) and I spoke breifly to the barman about getting a room. We went upstairs to look at the room, I saw that a couple of the other rooms had...

We stayed 4 days at Hostal Alaska in early June. The staff was very friendly and the room was small and clean. The location is perfect for exploring Madrid. Our room was facing the back, so most likely avoided all the nightlife sounds coming from Espoz y Mina (Irish pub next door). 29 EUR per night for a double room...

Stayed for three nights in May and can honestly say that there was nothing wrong with the place. It was in the middle of town close to Metro, bus stops, bars and shops. The Hostal Alaska was nothing special but for the price it was clean and tidy. There was 3 of us in a room with en-suite facilities. Water...

We got the apartment on Calle Barcelona. It was clean and modern. Yes, it's on a busy street, 2nd floor, right over some restaurants, so it's quite noisy at night when everyone comes out, if you keep your windows open. If you close them, the noise insulation is pretty good, and with ear plugs you'll sleep like a baby. Location...

My wife and I have been traveling for 5 months, we stayed at the Hostel Alaska (HA) just starting our second month, the second week in February, 2011. We often talk about what was our favorite or least favorite experience, food, etc. When we mention HA, it is in the category of least favorite lodging. HA is located about one...

We stayed in a room with a double bed and an en suite bathroom. There were also 2 single beds in the room we were in so it could accommodate up to 4 people. The room was basic and the bed was stiff. There is another hostal which shares the floor as Hostal Alaska, but it seems that they are...

This is a bit late, was actually there for 3 nights with my auntie and uncle (both in their 60's) in Sept '09. Must say that it was a fabulous stay ... location was fantastic, very near the Metro and right smack in Puerta del Sol! What more could we ask for? Security was good, as there was so many...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
