The Principal Madrid Hotel is much more than a luxurious modern boutique hotel. Its prime location in the heart of Madrid, its exclusive entrance, its 76 elegantly appointed rooms, the stunning Terraza (rooftop terrace,7th floor) with what may be the best views in Madrid, and its Ático (penthouse, 6th floor) where avant-garde haute cuisine meets classic cocktails in a space with the best music are reasons enough not to miss the opportunity of discovering this renovated building, now one of the capital’s must-see sights. The hotel’s impressive Ático and Terraza boast the best panoramic views of downtown Madrid. In both, amid large, lush garden areas, you can sip a cocktail or order from the menu concocted by Ramón Freixa (2 Michelin stars), soak up some sun in the Solarium or enjoy the sound of the overflow pool and the best ambient music or our outdoor showers in summer… and always with the finest service to ensure that your every wish is granted.

My family of 4 (2 adults + 2 kids) stayed at The Principal over Christmas. The front desk folks here are wonderful, they are so kind and accommodating. A few days before we checked in, I received a WhatsApp msg from the concierge asking the names and ages of my children. Turns out, they had prepared wrapped gifts for the children to open under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning! It was so beautiful and an amazing idea. We stayed in the Gran Via suite with a connecting room, so we had a large living room and 2 bedrooms. The housekeeping realised we had small children and on the second day, they had installed a bed rail on one of the beds when they saw I had used a suitcase stand and pillow in the event he fell off the bed - so thoughtful and proactive, this was really much appreciated. Every single night the turn down service left a nice treat, chocolate lollipop, sweets etc for the kids. On Christmas Eve they even left a note from Santa to each child! The hotel is very sophisticated, very trendy, so it was so amazing to have this family friendly service - during our 4 night stay we did not encounter any other families with small children, but we didn’t feel out of place at all, quite the opposite. The location is very good, walking distance to Retiro Park, the arts and craft market, Plaza Mayor etc. We will be back.

This boutique hotel is lovely- everything from its ideal central location in the City of Madrid, making ventures to most points of interest walkable, to the cleanliness and warmth of the well-appointed rooms to the impeccable service and hospitality of staff, this hotel is special.. The overall ambiance is charming and elegant. Buffet breakfasts each morning were beautifully presented with plentiful offerings representing both local Iberian and more common food fare. Nearby, the adjacent bar area, where we were so fortunate to have joined many other guests on New Year’s Eve, is where we all gathered to count down the minutes to midnight that were telecast to us from nearby Puerta Del Sol. That experience was nothing short of excitement and camaraderie, as we blessed the grapes before midnight, as Spanish tradition dictates. Such fun!

Special mention must be made to our very wonderful concierge, Carlos Cortez, who worked tirelessly with us to plan our visit weeks before our arrival and then helped us along while we were there. Carlos, we will miss your elegant and quiet disposition, your knowledge, your patience and most of all, your beautiful smile!. Gracias!

We plan to revisit the City of Madrid and Hotel Principal in the very near future. Thank you to all at this lovely hotel who have helped us to create such great memories. We will be back!

Called Adrian direct to enquire about rooms and prices, and he was just utterly lovely, kind and funny, ensuring we were given the best room and rate for our 3 person family visit. We accepted it there and then as he was trustworthy and there just are not many big city hotels where you feel like the owner really wants to help you to come. There was no falseness and the hotel is small enough for all the staff to enjoy being there as a team. He followed through and the room was pared-down chic, cool and inviting, the Super King topper was so comfortable, the room itself so quiet despite its totally central location above very busy roads, the windows seal perfectly and the aircon is very quiet. It is a rounded building with classic marble and wrought-iron central staircase, and the reception is at the top with sense of elegant calm living, and looks out through to the beautiful balcony with olive trees, travertine, cane, marble, and sky. The terrace one floor up is gorgeous, also greenery and views and simply space to lounge and be in the light and warm air. We ate on the balcony at the Artico restaurant and had the most sumptuous paired wines with each course and the care and attention of the lead waiter. Their belief in what they do is profound and contagious. We spent the most lovely 5 days at the end of May 2022.

Located centrally near the metro, shops, restaurants, and museums, the Madrid Hotel offers convenience but falls short in certain aspects. Despite its prime location, I rated the hotel three stars due to a few notable issues. The rooms exude a sense of darkness and dinginess, with black carpets and dark walls, possibly indicating a cost-saving measure that compromises cleanliness. Unfortunately, this led to terrible allergies during our stay. On a brighter note, the food served during breakfast and lunch was excellent—fresh and flavorful, deserving compliments to the chef. However, communication barriers were evident among restaurant servers who struggled with English and lacked enthusiasm, making it apparent that they weren't enjoying their work. Conversely, the front desk staff, notably Jose Carlos and Carlos, were exceptional in their roles. They were incredibly accommodating, assisting with restaurant bookings and always greeting guests with a warm smile, which significantly improved our overall experience.

Right in the centre of the city, this small but perfectly-formed hotel was spotlessly clean with very high standards of housekeeping. Linen was excellent quality and the bed was enormous! Quality bathroom products were provided. The breakfast, served on the sixth floor, was outstanding with an excellent selection of fruits, cheeses and other fresh produce. Staff were courteous, multilingual and well-presented. The in-house restaurant was excellent, but rather hidden away from passing customers as the entrance to the hotel is off a side street and very discrete . Altogether, an experience to be savoured and the Principal and its staff certainly made our six night stay very comfortable and pleasurable. Highly recommended.

I don’t know if everyone is exhausted or unhappy or maybe they think that at 5 star hotels the staff isn’t supposed to smile. The waitstaff and front desk, while responsive enough, just weren’t welcoming. We opted to drink in our room a couple of nights because the waitstaff was so icy. They were like that with everyone, not just us.
The maids and bellmen were more relaxed.
And breakfast from room service was always a crapshoot. It’s around 30 euros a person no matter what you order. The first morning I asked for 1 order of toast, 1 yogurt, 1 order of fruit, 1 orange juice, and 2 coffees.
They asked how many people and I said 2 so they brought a bunch of stuff we didn’t ask for and were told we couldn’t order breakfast a la carte and were charged almost 60 euros.
The restaurant closes surprisingly early for Madrid and the room service menu is very limited.
On the other hand, the room, though smallish, was very cozy and comfortable and the bed was HEAVEN!
Except for normal daytime and evening street noise it was very quiet.
The bathroom was smallish and has a very annoying black glass partition but it’s clean and seems new and everything works well. The shower is especially nice.
The hotel is smack in the middle of everything including the Chueca district and every imaginable type of bar and restaurant. Super easy walking to many major sights.
Because of the service I’m not sure I’d call it 5 star. But then they don’t charge as much as the other 5 star hotels do.

This hotel is located in the best location in Madrid. It’s so central and walking distance from everything you’d like to see. The hotel staff couldn’t be nicer. We even arrived a bit sick and they helped us out in terms of directing us to pharmacies, room service, and late cleaning of the room- so that we could sleep, etc. There’s a beautiful rooftop bar that is open for dinner until 10:30 PM. And the rooms are quite large and very comfortable. You will be very happy if you stay here!

The interior of the hotel is nicely decorated, as if you are visiting a European aristocrat's home.
The elevator was a bit scary as it was an old-fashioned hinged type, but the atmosphere of the reception and breakfast restaurant were all nice.
The reception staff provide good service and are lively and friendly, but the people serving breakfast are blunt.

Since breakfast was served between 7 and 8 o'clock, there was no one around so I was able to enjoy it quietly.

The room had everything except a toothbrush and was a bit chilly, but if you open the valve in the bathroom, the room gets a little warmer.

I avoided the Sol Square area because I thought it would be too noisy, but the hotel location is good.
The Prado Museum is an 8-minute walk away, Gran Via Street is right in front, and Sol Square is a short walk away.

It was a pleasant hotel in many ways.

My first visit to the beautiful capitol city of Madrid and The Principal Hotel did not disappoint...at all. From the moment of arrival when the bellman/valet greeted me and took my luggage, to check in to all the restaurant, hotel and room staff, all were 5 star. The concierges/front desk planned all my restaurants and events during my visit and their choices were authentic and excellent. Nothing was too much. The restaurant staff treated you kindly and were efficient and always helpful. Room staff kept the room looking check-in fresh everyday. Location at the beginning of Gran Via could not be better and you are always a short distance from all the major attractions and neighborhood. This is definitely a hotel to keep on your short list.
