2021 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in the Sassi di Matera - UNESCO World Heritage Site in Basilicata region - is the most extreme expression of a Historical Minor Heritage. A heritage, which represents the almost paradigmatic expression of this Minor History, marked by rocky caves, inhabited until the first years of the fifties. The sassi (stone settlement) have been turned into 18 romantic boutique bedrooms, simply furnished, candlelit and calming. Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is a cultural project born to bring hospitality experience outside the schematics, not classifiable as "stars" and far from any traditional concept of luxury, so much so that the New York Times deemed it one of “the most extraordinary destinations in the world”, the Times “one of the ten most beautiful hotels on the international scene” and the Tatler guide of Condé Nast has included among “the one hundred most beautiful hotels on the planet”. They talk about the luxury of emotions.

Everything about this hotel surpassed my expectations, from the comfort of the hotel to the surprise of how special and fascinating Matera turned out to be. Of course, I had seen the photos and knew it would be beautiful, but it is impossible to understand how breathtaking it is until you are there. I cannot forget the moment that we first arrived at the hotel, blown away by the majesty of the view of Murgia and then entering our room for the first time, candles lit, entering another time and exotic place. I love that the furniture is all restored original pieces from the caves, adapted to make everything very comfortable and losing none of the authenticity (minus the animals living inside with us!). The staff is both warm and friendly and extremely helpful. I am afraid I would leave someone out if I named everyone that helped me plan our stay before we arrived, but they made our stay seamless and connected us to the best activities for us, dinner reservations, transfers and the best guide in Matera. You definitely want to ask for Alessio to be your guide for both the Murgia walk and the Sassi tour. He comes from one of only a handful of families that were actually living in the Sassi during the 1980's. He also has a degree in medieval history and is EXTREMELY interesting and informative. One of the greatest highlights for me of our 2 1/2 weeks traveling around southern Italy was the cooking class I took at the hotel with Nunzia! I cook and bake a lot, but love to collect new skills and recipes when I travel and this was no average class. To begin with, I entered the cave church/breakfast room which had been set up just for our private class, lit by candles, table set out with all of the ingredients, including some exceptionally fragrant herbs that permeated the room. Nunzia is a person whose love for local cuisine and joy of cooking and sharing what she knows is written all over her face and in her actions. Spending time with her was part of the value of the experience and she patiently let me practice my rusty italian, doing the class all in italian. She guided me through making pasta without a recipe and artfully how to shape the cavatelli and calzone and the other dishes. I had such a wonderful time and can't wait to try out the new dishes on my friends and family. A couple hours later, she served the food we made in a private dinner for my husband and I in the candlelit church. It was DELICIOUS and an experience we will never forget. I promised to send Nunzia photos of the dinners I make using what I learned from her and next time I am in Matera, we are going to do another class focused on sweets and bread! I heard a couple of other hotel guests commenting on the fact that they had a tub but no shower, so you may want to make sure you do, if that matters to you. I have very long hair, so prefer a shower and we did have one. Other than that, be sure you plan enough days in Matera. We had two full days and one half day and it was NOT enough to see all we wanted to see and do.

WOW! I don't know where to begin. I stay in a lot of nice hotels, but Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita was a stay I will remember forever. Matera is the most incredible town, hidden in the hills of inner Puglia, it is well worth taking some time away from the region's famous beaches, to visit. To truly immerse yourself in the history of the place, I think it's definitely worth staying a few days, and the experience is all the more authentic if you get the chance to stay in the Sextantio caves. The caves, built into the limestone, are just magnificent. They face the mountinans and are the most beautiful, peaceful place to watch the sunset! Our suite was absolutely breathtaking, with both candle light throughout and also electric lamps (tastefully placed around the room with warm bulbs to match the candles). We had a lovely big bath in our room even had a balcony off the bedroom. Everything about the room was stunning and so carefully curated with effortless chic style, from the lovely old wooden table and chairs, to the modern bathroom appliances, tucked in to perfectly sit alongside the thousand year old stone steps. For anyone worried about staying in "a cave", don't stress at all! Everything about it was luxe. The floors are smooth and very clean, the bathroom has everything you could need, the bathroom products are very high end, the bedding was soft and heavenly, and there's electricity and space to hang clothes! They're very glam caves! The staff were lovely, we were looked after by Marco who was just charming - he knows his stuff and gave us some excellent restaurant recommendations, and is clearly very well versed at making guests feel special. The breakfast at Sextantio was also a treat, really delicious breads, pastries, cakes, cheeses, way more than we needed, but we ate it all! And all with a breathtaking view over the mountains. All up, it was one of the most exceptionally unique and beautiful stays I have ever had, and although I would call it a "once in a lifetime" hotel, I very much hope to return again... worth every penny!

Dear Guest, Thank you for staying with us and for your review. According to our cultural project, 18 cave dwellings lived for centuries in the Unesco Sassi area have been restored in the most authentic way possibile and converted into hotel rooms. Through a researched understanding and an honesty with the buildings’ origins – combined with a touch of poetic license – you can recreate the soul of a building, even when the life lived there was one of poverty – as in the case of the Sassi caves. It is through such a restoration that we can come to know and understand the past - combining culture and regeneration in one concept. On our website you can enter all the rooms and choose the one you can prefer the most. As for the bill, please consider that breakfast is always included in the room rate and, as stated in all the communications we had before and during the stay, in the city of Matera there is the holiday city tax and you can choose to park the car in the free spots outside the old quarter of Sassi, or to purchase a spot inside a secure garage, with pickup and car valet included in the rate. Looking forward to welcoming you again in the near future, thank you and best regards. We stayed one night at this magical place. Although it was well above our budget still it was worth the experience. The superior room (cave) was just out of a fairytale. They claim to be in the top 100 most beautiful hotels on the planet. I have been to few of those hotels and I certainly vouch for that. We had to drop our car at a designated car park in the city and were picked up from there. The whole transfer went very smoothly. Although we were quite early the staff at the reception made everything possible for us to have the room without waiting. Each cave has its unique character. The ambient lighting and decor are so original. We are so glad that we stayed there. Without a doubt it is the best hotel that I have ever been to. I give them 6 out of 5!
