We had upgraded with our travel company in order to secure a really good view and 4* accommodation. The good news was that the view was awesome but all rather down hill after that. The room was shabby and dark with furniture that needs updating. We had only 1 socket for the modern applicances one uses these days and of course...

Clean, good elevator and breakfast. Rooms facing east-city bay-mountain views have small balconies...awesome vistas and are great if use a camera. I got some great vista and detail shots using a zoom lens. The small in lobby gift shop has some cool small gifts at reasonable prices.

Hi,

We walked from the Grand Hotel Vesuvius to the centre in about 20/25 minutes. It's a straightforward walk, just following the main road. However, there is a short part where there is no footpath, which is fine in the daytime, but may be dangerous at night.

Pompei and Herculenum are easily reached by train from Sorrento, and while a private guide may be wonderful - you can simply invest in an audio guide. Both cities are AMAZING and some sort of guidance is almost a must.

As for the Amalfi coast itself - not sure about organised day trips, but avoid taxis. Traffic is a nightmare, even when you're not driving. If you're flexible enough, choose 2-3 locations and navigate through public transport - boats, trains and busses.

Yes but the cost is so much more expensive. We used the train for Pompeii and Herculaneum, both are very easy to get to via the train.
