This was a great, affordable place to stay in a location that made it easy to see the best sites in Rome! The staff were extremely friendly, patient, and catered to the requests of my traveling group. The rooms were clean and quiet, I slept great, and I left with nothing but positive thoughts about the Stargate Hostel!

five of us were here for two nights. Upon checking in, we have checked the price and booked the room via hostelbookers website. However, we were asked for extra 4 euro "city tax" per person upon checking in (2 euro per night/per pax). When I checked with other hostels in Rome, most of them have included the tax in the...

Stayed here with four friends for three nights and booked a five-bed-room with private bathroom several weeks in advance. Despite this, we were told on arrival that it "wasn't available" and were given a four-bed-room and a single, which were apparently much nicer. Both of these rooms stank of sewage and the air conditioning didn't work in either. We insisted...

We only stayed here for one night and couldn't wait to leave the next morning. Dirty smelly bathroom, furniture falling apart and pillows with the thickness of a teabag. No wifi or tv. Our room was on the second floor and the lift wasn't working, and nobody helped us out with luggage. The breakfast ladies don't even pretend to be...

After arriving here, the staff was friendly with us (at least the man from the mornings), the rooms are big and clean, and it is located well, near the train station and close to many restaurants. The only downside is that the wifi works only at the reception and you need to pay for it.

We visited this hotel in march this year. The name in the booing said Hotel Montestella which it was not. Very small room to fit 5 people. It's in the same old building as other 3 or 4 hotels - some of them with more than one name. Staff was too rude specially one serving the breakfast which was mere...

I stayed here in July 2013. The manager was really helpful, he pointed us in the right direction for getting our laundry done, good food and so on. He was also really nice and polite to my girlfriend and I. The rooms are really cheap and basic, but they are excellent value. They have a fridge and air conditioning. The...

The rooms are basic but clean and the street is quiet so we slept well, especially with ac. Wifi is not available in the rooms, only in the lobby and only for one hour and only between the hours of 8am to 10pm. What a joke! Staff were unfriendly.

We stayed at this hostel for 2 nights in mid July. The room, although basic, was clean and comfortable making for a good nights sleep. However, we found the customer service to be abysmal! Upon arrival we were greeted by the receptionist Farid, who proceeded to fire off the details of the hotel as quickly as possible and when asked...

The hostel was kind of ugly from outside, but the room is very clean and confort. For the price it was very good. There is no elevator from the front door to the reception, and it has like 6 steps. But to the room there is one, but not very nice. The location is good, 3 blocks from the Termini....

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
