We have just returned from a long weekend and we had booked the Residenza Santa Maria based on a recommendation from a friend who had stayed at the sister Hotel Santa Maria in February. Pre-trip communications were really helpful and expedient by the staff. We wanted an Italian experience rather than a faceless-could-be-in-any-European-city-hotel experience and the hotel was beautifully authentic.... More

My daughter and I just spent 3 nights at the Residenza. We enjoyed the tasteful, subdued style and decor. The room was spacious, comfortable and quiet. As soon as you step outside the Residenza, you find yourself in the midst of the lively, picturesque area of Trastevere. Although there are many tourists (like ourselves), it has a vibrant very Roman... More

We stayed in November 2011 and could not have been happier with the location, service, and people. The owner, Stefano, went out of his way to take care of my wife and I. He gave us great recommendations for eating in Trastevere. The Trastevere area is away from all the busy tourist spots in Rome and you have a nice... More

We had lovely 4 days in Rome staying in Resideza Santa Maria. Perfect location and comfortable clean rooms. Staff was very friendly and helpfull. Our room was bit dark (hence the hotel is built in old monastery) but did not really matter as we never were in during the days as we had long days discovering the wonders of Rome.... More

Our daughter had been studying in Rome for 5 months, and the rest of our family went to visit her. We choose Residenzia Santa Maria because it was a short walk to her school, although I was a little concerned about the location. It was very much the opposite. After seeing the rest of Rome, this was by far my... More

Just got back from 3 days in Rome. Wanted to stay in Trastevere and picked this hotel based on reviews here. Got here fairly easily from the airport, took the F1 train to Trastverse, then it was a quick tram ride to the hotel. Make sure you buy and validate tickets for the tram and trains. Don't always check but... More

We were a middle-aged couple staying at Residenze Santa Maria for 8 nights in March-April 2012. It was our first time there and it met and exceeded expectations: very clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. An extra plus was that it was also a nice quiet place, yet well-located within Trastevere. The staff, especially Giovanna and Hussein, were wonderful. They were... More

This is a gem! Small, personal hotel. Nice breakfast, great cappuccinis! Big enough rooms, beams and stone walls. Not many english speaking tv-channels, but you would have much else to do in Trastevere:) Apart from all sights and high end shopping, Trastevere offers all you need for a weekend in Rome. And by choosing this hotel you are close by... More

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Residenza Santa Maria, is a small exclusive Hotel de charme, located I the heart of Rome, just a stone's from the magnificent and picturesque square of Santa Maria in Trastevere. This boutique Hotel is the result of the skilful restoration of a 17th century building. The whole house is dominated by brick arches, wooden ceilings, artistic hand painted frescos and wall decorations which give to the Residenza Santa Maria an atmosphere of refined elegance. With only 6 rooms, the Residenza Santa Maria is somewhat smaller than its namesake which allows for even greater atmosphere, notwithstanding the fact that having only recently opened it is also equipped with high tech environment. The large and quite, no smoking, rooms, some of which family rooms, are fully equipped with private bathroom with tub and shower, A/C, telephone, mini-bar, safe, satellite flat panel TVs, free internet connection, boiler for tea/coffee and other amenities. In the breakfast room, once a Roman cistern of the II cen. BC, decorated by original ancient Roman artifacts found on site during restoration of the building, guests can enjoy a rich and delicious buffet breakfast, (scramble or boiled eggs, ham, cheese, salami, fresh bread, assortment of biscuits, cakes, fresh fruits, yogurt, fresh croissants, selection of fruit juices etc.). Thanks to great location, from the Residenza Santa Maria, guests can easily reach the main tourist sites like Campo de' Fiori, Navona Square, the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi's fountain, the Roman Forum and Coliseum with just a relaxing stroll through a maze of fascinating medieval streets. The Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Square are a few minutes away. Furthermore Trastevere, apart from the beauty of its mediaeval narrow little streets, is filled with typical restaurants, markets, pubs and cafes. The Residenza Santa Maria also offers services like transfer to and from the airport, private guided tours, laundry service, shiatsu massage, beauty centre, baby sitting service and car and scooter hire, as well as offering free use of bikes to its personal guests. ... more   less
