Getting there
Somewhat walkable
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
Inn charming, well decorated, but aging, old, noisy with sometimes outdated infrastructure (like many hotels in the area that no longer compete with international competition, the glory days are over here). Abandoned houses in the vicinity of the property, which creates a somewhat worrying atmosphere. Inn gardens poorly maintained (uncleaned deckchairs, tablecloths with dirt, etc.) and "lounging" employees (this is the "dolce vita" without falling into easy stereotypes).
However, do not eat the Inn menu in the evening, even if the restaurant room is pretty, deliciously vintage. The 3-course menu costs 39 Euros (starter, main course and dessert), which is expensive for austere cuisine that reminds me of a hospital (potatoes and carrots, with a small piece of meat). Pasta is good in primo piatto, drinks are over-Awarded.
The whole thing smells of scam, foul fumaroles that embalm the place (you have to pay many extras here, the second linen for the pool for example). The incomplete menu (two courses only: with a pasta starter and a salad that is not on the menu) costs 22 Euros. I asked for soup (which was on the menu as a starter) instead of salad, but I did not want dessert for health reasons (blood sugar). So I ate two dishes. The invoice arrives is........ 39 Euros charged, the full menu for me!! I traveled a lot but a scam and such bad faith to justify (a soup instead of salad, it's not their fault that I don't eat dessert, etc.), never seen before! 39 Euros for a potato soup and some bolognese pasta!! Of course I yelled, I got angry in public (another man was arguing the same day at the reception) and finally received a questionable discount from... 6 Euros.
Anyway, I'm going back on a plane next year to go back to the seaside.

We chose this hotel due to its location and after reading the reviews - situated on the outskirts of Stresa with a 20 minute walk into the town along the promenade on the lake edge with stunning views. The hotel met our expectations, a lovely spotlessly clean room (230) with views of both the mountains behind and the lake. Our maid looked after us very well changing the towels every day, making up the bed and always providing an extra toilet roll which I am always concerned about! Excellent shower as well. Very good breakfast and we were so pleased to see that this included muesli, lots of fresh fruit and yoghurt - perfect for us. The hotel is just a short distance from the local boats that take you to the three islands and a 10 minute walk to the station and a two minute walk to the local bus stop. After a busy day, it was so nice to have the pool to come back to in the afternoon to chill out. We had a 2 week stay but we had no problem finding something new to do each day - too much in fact to list here. We did not eat in the hotel, but walked into town each evening around 8 o' clock which was always bustling. We had four favourite restaurants that we stuck to and I will do separate reviews for these.

This is a truly charming hotel and we felt a warm welcome from the moment we arrived. I can’t remember the last time someone opened the door with a genuine welcome!
This hotel has real personality and exudes the character that only an older building can. However the things that needed to be modern were - from the lift to all floors (including the panoramic roof terrace) to the plumbing and room fittings, all modern and spotlessly clean. As a contrast the hallways and public spaces were filled with interesting art and potted plants.
We booked a Lake View room with a terrace- the view was breathtaking from the large terrace. If you want to wake up to the ever changing beauty of the lake then this is the one to go for.
The staff on the front desk were so helpful and organised our trip by boat to the Islands- so easy. The dining room service was first class from waiters in black tie and the food had real Italian flare.
All in all this hotel is a real traditional gem and a relaxing and comforting place to spend some time.

The Hotel Royal in Stresa is in a delightful and convenient location, off the highway on the Viale Lido. It's a very short walk downhill to the dock for ferries to the Isole Borromee. From our balconies, the view was gorgeous with Lago Maggiore in the foreground. Our rooms were comfy and quite clean. We enjoyed the the breakfast buffets in the beautiful dining room, and well as the cozy bar balcony for cocktails in the late afternoons. We met interesting fellow travelers there, too. Giovanna, at the front desk, could not have been more kind and helpful in arranging our stay, and helping us figure out ahead of time how to make restaurant reservations. Thank you, Giovanna! (From the U.S., we called 3 excellent restaurants and were able to make reservations over the phone; these restaurants did not take online reservations.) Off-street parking is tight, but ok! And since we walked down to the ferry dock, we didn't have to re-park on days we visited the islands. I would suggest having a car if you stay at this hotel and wish to visit sites other than the islands.

We booked direct with the hotel to get a fourth floor room with a view of the lake... what a view! We were celebrating our anniversary the day before we arrived and booked our first meal at the hotel to celebrate it. The staff are all welcoming and the owner made it a special occasion for us. Thank you, it was a beautiful holiday in a beautiful setting after three years of failing to get to Lake Maggiore we arrived! The room was spacious and bathroom perfect and the view from the balcony elevated and spectacular across the lake, at sunset and night its is magical and from a latter day age. We thought we saw Ernest Hemingway across the way - only joking. The garden is a blessing of flowers that artfully creep indoors to adorn the foyer and reception. The breakfast is good wholesome continental and not at all English, so enjoy something different and choose from a wide selection. There are no tea making facilities in the room, but there is a fridge to keep cool drinks. It is popular with Germans as well as us Brits, and it is great fun to try and speak the languages from school and we think the Italians appreciate any effort so try to learn a bit of basic Italian before you go, it makes the experience authentic, but there are people there who can speak good English, just don't expect it from everyone. As we were on a budget we only ate at the hotel twice, but we treated ourselves to the Black Angus steak on one night and it was delicious! The nearest ferry terminal is just down the road and is Carciano. Ferryies are less frequent here but we found it fine for our needs and we only used the local ferries. We watched people cram into smaller tourist boats for their whistlestop tours of the islands but we did one at a time and that suited our chilled agenda and feeling part of the life of the lake. A perfect holiday for us after all of those cancellations with that terrible plague. Thank you wonderful and welcoming Italy and Hotel Royal staff.

Excellent hotel with a great ambience, particularly in the lounge area. Friendly staff. A great location, just a short walk to the boarding point for the island ferries, 15 minutes' walk into town & 10 minutes to the station. Good breakfast spread. Room was a little small but perfectly adequate for our needs, and the aircon wasn't too intrusive. The pool was great for the hot days. Couldn't really fault anything. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Hotel Royal made our trip perfect! Some positive points: You won't find a better breakfast anywhere. Lots of choice and top quality. It is possible to have breakfast outside, which gives you a wonderful holiday feeling. Dinner was very tasty. You immediately notice that the hotel is run by a family. The garden is very well maintained and the lady provides fresh flowers every day. Cozy bar with professional cocktails. Very neat rooms, thanks to the cleaning staff. And then, the view of the Isola de Boromeo and the lake, really beautiful. The promenade to the center is highly recommended! Work point: the coffee is sometimes too strong and make more use of the beautiful rooftop terrace.

The increase in the price of the room is unacceptable, approximately 30% more than in 2022 for a room with the same characteristics and for the same period. When booking I believed that the higher cost was partly due to an upgrade of the room compared to the previous year. Minibar not working (replaced), lack of hot water in the afternoon of August (boiler block), unstable wifi. Solvable problems that become relevant in light of the aforementioned price increase.

The Royal hotel is a villa, enlarged and transformed into a hotel. It is surrounded by flowers, you immediately perceive a romantic atmosphere and great attention to the customer, you feel pampered. Among the advantages is the location, a stone's throw from the lake and the ferry stop for the Borromeo Islands. Parking is free, excellent breakfast and dinner and very clean. What can I say...we hope to be able to return

What a wonderful week! I am mid fifties and travelled solo with Inghams for a week. My room was very spacious with a very comfortable bed, ample storage and a great balcony with beautiful views of the grounds and the lake. The grounds and swimming pool were fantastic and the hotel gives you a pool towel. No issues getting a lounger. I am vegetarian and was half board. Breakfast was an amazing selection of food. You order dinner at the breakfast and the lovely head waiter negotiated food for the evening and it was delicious. The whole hotel is beautiful, an expanded villa with so many lovely pieces, paintings, sofa areas etc. I enjoyed a cocktail in the bar, the safe is free and housekeeping was efficient. It is superbly situated for the Carciano ferry point so you can get around easily. I had a brilliant week, it was good value for money, Stresa is gorgeous and I would not hesitate to recommend.

Going to the train station from the hotel its uphill- going to hotel from train station downhill- approx 10 euros for a less than 5 minute taxi ride- but its safer to do that as uneven pavement, at times no sidewalk, many cars are speeding by and its not that safe when your on the road- it is walkable tho- but would not advise walking at night.
When we stayed we did get bitten by mosquitos. As it is very close to lake, there were some. Not a huge problem but I’d recommend repellent. Beautiful place to visit, we enjoyed it
There are more places to choose from in the Stresa area.
