I am not a fan of Italian trains. The carriages stand hip high above the platform and are accessed by a set of near vertical narrow steps. Definitely not luggage friendly and we had a train change in Bolzano. Access to the various platforms is by way of underground tunnels. Most are serviced by a lift except we could not see the lift up to our departure from Verona. Standing nonplussed at the foot of about 30 or more steps a lad, probably Eastern European, grabbed our two bags and was up the stairs like a startled gazelle. He was not too impressed by the €5 tip we offered and said €20 would be more appropriate. He left with €5.
At Merano station I felt the will to live dwindling when we found the upward lift to the street was not working. No Eastern Europeans were in sight either, probably warned off.
Our one hour forty minute ride from Verona to Bolzano was by an Italian semi-fast train with one first class carriage that was like an oven, unventilated and with sealed picture windows. After about ten minutes the conductress told us the aircon was out and that it would be ok if we cared to move into the adjacent second class car. I don't suppose it would be worth the effort to try for a refund.
On the way back to Verona at the end of our stay the train from Merano left almost ten minutes late and we missed the connection in Bolzano. The next train out from Bolzano had only second class cars and three of them had defective air conditioning and sealed windows.
It was very hot on our first full day in Merano, 34C at noon but with cooling glimpses of snow on the peaks either side of the valley. The heat is quite extraordinary and I don't recall it being hotter in Spain. Merano is proud of its special climate which has been attracting travellers for more than a century. Misters cooled the outside terrace of the hotel where we could take afternoon tea. Everywhere around the entrance and front terrace of the hotel there was jasmine in full bloom. The heady perfume was overpowering but very agreeable. Jasmine obviously thrives there. Enormous perfumed hedges are everywhere in the town and it can be seen climbing trees too.
The big agricultural thing here is apples and vineyards. Orchards are everywhere and the hotel puts three or four varieties of apple in the room each day. It must be sensational at blossom time though I have seen no reference to it in the blurb extolling the mountains, walks, skiing and so on.
Food is a never ending show at the hotel. Breakfast goes on until 11 and a light lunch of salad and soup is put out from 12 until 2. From 3 until 5pm there is afternoon tea with cakes resembling an Austrian patisserie (Austria is only 10 miles away) then dinner is from 7pm onwards. They took our dinner order, all six courses, during breakfast. At the pool a waiter came around with cooling spritzers more than once in case anyone was thirsty or peckish.
The hotel's USP is unending choice. At breakfast the marmalade/jam table puts our larder to shame, there are at least five pools, fresh or salt water and temperatures from a brisk 22C up to a delightful and enticing 32C. At dinner the fifth course is from the cheese table. Not cheese trolley, a large table is needed to display the hundred or more cheeses, breads and assorted chutneys on offer.
Our room was huge, with a sitting room and separate bedroom. The terrace outside it looked towards the mountains and had two couches as well as a table and two Directors Chairs. We always ask for twin beds so I was a bit surprised to see what looked like a double, and the mattress was just that but on top were twin duvets. Bathroom amenities are 'different'. No cakes of soap, but large unbranded bottles of all the things you might want including liquid soap and so on. A white wicker basket with a handle sits next to the bidet and contains all you will need for time at the pool. The relaxation area, with pools, has indoor, glass conservatory and outdoor areas with more loungers than the total number of guests so no German towel issues here, and a suitable place to rest in any climate. Access to the large heated pool is both from indoors (for the cold weather) via a plastic curtained route, or directly from outdoors.
The restaurant has a large outdoor area but you need to indicate your preference for this option early, maybe at the time of booking, and we were allocated a table inside where we were very satisfied. The tables are well spaced, a generous size and have a good view of the garden. There is an extensive wine list but each night the hotel suggests one white and one red local wine by the glass. They are well chosen examples of wines of the Tirol served in 250 or 500ml pitchers and all the ones we drank were enjoyed and very good value. The Tirol wines were quite unknown to me but it a big wine producing area and it was an opportunity to taste and enjoy.
The first course at dinner each night is an antipasto buffet. One or two variations are added each night but essentially it does not vary. It has a huge selection so you can create your own variations. The remaining four courses, not including the cheese course, have two or three options labelled as light for the diet conscious, South Tyrolean, or the Chef's Mediterranean themed inventions.
During the season the kitchen runs various demonstrations and the hotel has wine tasting events as well. None was scheduled for the time we were there but the kitchen is inventive and it showed in the quality and presentation of our five dinners.
There were two small negative points, neither of which detracted from our appreciation and enjoyment of our stay overall. The mattress of our bed was reaching the end of its useful life and when sitting on the edge of the bed I was aware of the springs. However, lying down the bed was comfortable with a generous mattress topper provided so there was no need to comment. The second was a language problem. Nearly all the staff we has contact with spoke quite good English and the daily news sheet providing information about the day's events was available in English as well. We saw that there was a hotel transfer to the activity we were planning that day and presented ourselves at the scheduled time only to be told that the transfer was cancelled because no one had signed up for it. The events listing for the week is displayed at reception but it was in German so went unnoticed. We made our way to our event by bus, quite easily, using the free bus pass that the hotel provides all guests.
Merano is well worth a visit and hotel Irma deserves its recommendation. I have rated it four stars - note that this means 'very good'. It is not world class and five stars but is truly charming. But access by train from Verona, Innsbruck or even Munich can’t be recommended so if you do not hire a car or cannot arrange a private transfer then maybe choose another destination.
I'm arrived at the hotel the very exact dated that I've reserved, which is the 12/08/2012,but the hotel had charged me for the late arrived(?)and as for the earlier departure, without any clear policy on the confirmed e-mailed they had sent it to me.(12/08-17/08)
Originally,I was booked from the 11/08,but did called for postponed to the day after(12/08),AT THE VERY SAME DAY OF THE 9/08(one hour later, just to avoid the saturday summer traffic)
The hotel asked to charged me for Euro 726 to confirmed for the room in e-mail,but ended to charged me for Euro736 directly with my visa (they said it's was a mistake, and didn't do anything about it)and I'm not even step in the hotel yet!!!
I stayed for 3 days, out of 5 days that I reserved, which by any standard for a hotel all over the world,I don't have to pay for any penalty,or even if they really are in deep crises, one day penalty would be understandable, but they charged me before they even see me,and charged me for late arrived?Where else on earth do this?(with 24 hours noticed of postponed dated)
UN SINCERE
I supposed to have a 90sqm. suite, the newest and the best room in the hotel ,but I ended up with an air con only in the living room area, poor selection of tv channel, not even a piece of cotton disc or cotton buds ,a shower cap is nowhere to be found and for the 4starsS suite,I have to use the same old wet towels, that has been put up to dry on the shower box?
NO wi-fi connection in the 90sqm.suite,and it's supposed to be my lap top that is doesn't worked?
(it's worked only in the lobby area)and of course elsewhere around the globe
ON LEAVING
NO APOLOGIZE,NOT EVEN A WORD OF THANK YOU considered of several times I had to go up&down to tries to arranged for my laptop,on breakfast that I had to BEGGED for the small portion of an omlette ,on the only once croissant that I had, just because I'm arrived too late at the breakfast room ,on dinner which's a full board, and it's truly is,because the menu has changed, yes, but only the alphabet.
ON WHAT THEY CALLED, COCCOLE
Perhaps it's the best thing they do,but that doesn't take much,it's nice though to have a sugar coated welcoming letter, but that it just not enough,to smiling here, helloing there, nothing deliver and clear as promise(especially for the price they charged me,and for what they pretend to be)
SO,we decided to shorten our stay, truly disappointed
ABSURDLY TRUTH
This is the first time I did such a reviewed, normally I did only rewarding review for the good intention+well done jobs for whom ever deserved it,because I still believe in a relationships and a great hospitality ,a small details, and a real value of life and understanding that it's seem so forgotten, and I'm truly sorry for doing this, but one thing for sure is that GREEN is always GREEN an even GREENER in the higher altitude, doesn't matter how many stars is in the sky ,it's becoming only for EVERGREEN.
Having stayed at many five star establishments throughout the world during my 30 year career mainly running companies within the American I.T. industry, and although this was leisure rather than business I can and do confidently recommend The Irma to anybody.
"Firstly let me thank everyone at The Irma for a wonderful 8 days. The facilities, food, environment and of course location were second to none. A special mention should be made concerning the staff, every one were without exception polite, helpful, considerate and nothing, but nothing was too much trouble. they were all such nice friendly people, which of course reflects the quality and professionalism of management. I have made these comments particularly as I did not complete my end of stay document. So, thank you again".

The staff and service were absolutely superb, and the hotel's owners (the Meister family) take a very hands on approach to management. We were assigned a delightful lady who served us at most breakfasts and dinners who spoke good English and did an absolutely excellent job.
The food was excellent and the hotel has a superb quality, fairly priced wine list. We were particularly impressed with the extensive cheese buffet at dinner and wonderful fresh bread available at all meals. The breakfast buffet was good with quality food, good coffee and a wide choice of teas.
The room itself was pretty much as we had expected based on the photos and information. There are no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms, which is no surprise as the hotel website didn't mention them, but would be a welcome addition. The views were outstanding and we appreciated the little touches such as blankets on our balcony sunloungers and fresh local apples in the room on arrival.
The only disappointment of our excellent week was the fact that one of the blinds in our room was missing. The tree house has floor to ceiling windows around three sides, and since the curtains are thin voiles, the blackout blinds were essential. The missing one was also the one nearest the bed, so we were woken up by the light at dawn. We didn't bring this to the attention of management (if it had just been broken we would have mentioned it, but because it was missing we assumed they must have known to remove it). If they had mentioned it at check-in and offered a change of rooms that would have been fine. Even fitting a temporary curtain or something similar until the blind could have been replaced would also have been fine. A hotel's most important duty is a good night's sleep for its guests, and in this respect, we felt somewhat let down.
We thought long and hard about how to reflect this in this review, and whether to rate the hotel as a 4 rather than a 5, and in the end decided that everything else was just so good, we nevertheless decided to give it a 5. We would certainly return to this excellent property, although we would probably choose a room in the main hotel building next time. We have no hesitation in recommending the Hotel Irma.
The accommodations were just the best, super comfortable beds, super clean, bathrooms had everything you need, so spacious also!. Views are breath taking! :)
The pool areas were just fantastic, the lazy river kind of pool was a lot of fun when on.
Great for families, the family-employees make everything to make you feel just like home, every part of the hotel had a charm to it.
Food was the best I have ever had in Italy (dinner, breakfast or lunch you name it, also room service!!!!)
The roomgirl made our bed and was very inventive. See the picture...
Try it!!
