We stayed in this hotel for seven nights at the end of August 2007. Our de luxe room was more than adequate; it was quiet and on a non smoking floor as we had requested. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom large and everything was spotless. The toiletries and towels provided were fine and we had no grumbles with the...

Good, clean rooms. Breakfast was very pleasing with plenty of choice. Fruit, cheeses and ham all excellent. In a good location for water bus etc. Pleasanr walk to St. Marks. Would recommed.

We had reserved a double non-smoking room about 6 weeks ahead of time. We were given a room at the end of the hall on the 3d floor which overlooked the garden area. The unit was free of any smoke, which was delightful, and the air conditioning worked great. The room is decorated in a neutral two tone motif, modern...

My wife and I, together with two teenage boys, stayed four nights at this hotel at the start of August 2007. We loved it. We selected it based in part on reviews on this site and can agree with most of the positive points mentioned. It is some distance from St Mark's square - the 20-30mins mentioned in other reviews...

Just returned from 4 days at this lovely hotel. It is in a very quiet, residential area of Venice, but only about 15 mins walk to the centre, or 5 mins on the vaporetto. The rooms were spacious and clean - we had a junior suite (had booked via the hotel website for a special offer and had to pre-pay...

A truly wonderful hotel. Away from the madding crowd which is Venice but near enough to visit all the major sights. A former monastery it has been renovated and provides excellent facilities. The rooms are bright with all you would expect from a four star hotel. It has an enclosed garden which is bliss to relax in with a spritzer...

It's taken me a year to write this because I didn't want to give away my secret. I spent months researching affordable, off-the-beaten path hotels for a trip my wife and I took last year from Sorrento to Trieste, with Rome and Venice in bewteen. We booked through the Best Western website. It is about 40 minutes by vaporetto from...

Everything about the Sant'Elens Hotel was top quality. The whole experience at this hotel was first class starting from the check-in. When we arrived at 11.30pm on a Friday night, we were advised that the restaurant was closed but if we were hungry, they would ask the chef to make something for us. The room was so lovely, modern, a...

We were booked into this hotel by a tour company and I found it to be one of the nicest hotels in our two week journey through all of Italy. It was quiet, and far from the tourist areas which were easily accessable. The room was a decent size and the only drawback to it was the shower closet in...

The Sant'Elena is a Best Western, but don't let that put you off. This is not a soulless chain, but a rather charming little haven. First off, it is in a quiet residential area, about a mile from San Marco. That might look remote on the map, but in fact it is a bonus, especially if you are staying for...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
