This was really a cheap option to stay in Venice. The place is owned by a lovely Italian granny speaking nothing but Italian and the place itself is a bit rusty but it sure it is really homely. We liked it quite a much! The location was also excellent since for us walking though the alleys and squares before reaching... More

What a lovely place to stay in Venice! This place was a brilliant find and we felt lucky to be staying in a part of Venice not on the typical tourist trail but still really convenient to get to all the main sites. Location was very good for the bus and the train station. The room and bathroom were clean... More

Casa Chiumento is often listed as a hostel, but it fits more into the "budget hotel" variety. There are only 4 rooms that can fit 2 people each, and it is operated by the older woman who lives in the apartment above it. Don't expect reception, internet, your own dazzling bathroom. What you can expect is a quaint, clean, well-decorated,... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
