The service quality varies significantly, with several guests encountering long wait times and poor problem resolution.
Although the ambiance initially conveys old-world charm, it is frequently marred by dated and worn furnishings. I stayed at the Hotel Carlton for the first night of my Italian vacation, after flying in from California. The very best aspect was the location - just a short walk away (less than 10 minutes) from the main transportation hub in Venice. It was nearly perfect for a one-night stay - I was going to be traveling with friends to Cortina the next morning (via the same hub). At the same time, it also felt removed enough from the traveler throngs to feel like Venice.
Was my internal clock messed-up when I got there? Yep. Did I arrive way too early to check in? Hell yes! But the friendly, English-speaking staff gave me a map, let me change into warm weather garb, stored my luggage, and told me a time to return for a clean room and a key. Then I was off to explore the Venice maze...while also trying to stay awake. My friends arrived at the hotel a few hours later.
As for the rooms: it was a very basic, traditional hotel with nominal amenities and some old-world charm. The room key, from the previous century, was large and heavy (and meant to be left at the front desk when you wander). Nevertheless, the rooms and beds were clean and the staff were friendly and accomodating. Breakfast was offered downstairs for an additional price, but we chose one of the many nearby cafes for a better deal.
The hotel also offered a rooftop bar and restaurant. We visited before sunset to grab a cocktail before we headed out to a dinner spot nearby.
The Hotel Carlton may not be the best bang-for-buck in Venice, but I enjoyed my stay here. I'd come again if I was here for a short visit, and if I needed to be close to transportation. For longer visits, I'd probably venture closer to the heart of town.

The first thing to understand about Venice is that it is an ancient city—one that does not expand with new construction but instead preserves, repurposes, and recycles its existing architecture. When we arrived at the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal, the excitement began before we even stepped inside, simply by admiring the building’s historic façade.
Upon entering the lobby, we were welcomed into a beautifully maintained space that exuded old-world charm. The reception staff were exceptional, especially Dennis, who made us feel right at home. We were handed our room key—yes, a real key—and made our way upstairs.
Opening the door to our room felt like stepping into history. It was a single room with a double bed and a bathroom equipped with a tub, shower wand, toilet, and bidet. Though it was an interior room, I actually preferred it over a canal-view room, as it provided a peaceful retreat from the noise and constant movement of the waterways.
Our three-day stay was truly enjoyable. The hotel’s breakfast was delightful, and the dinner we had at the restaurant was outstanding. Exploring Venice through its alleyways and by water taxi added to the experience, allowing us to discover hidden gems—small back alleys and little shops catering mainly to locals. These are the moments that make Venice special. Find the narrowest street. What a blast.
I would return to the Carlton Hotel in a heartbeat

We were very concerned stopping at this hotel with the recent reviews however don't be put off. Check in was easy, we stopped the top floor (4th floor) room 455, room was of decent size with 2 wardrobes for hanging plenty of clothes, very clean All staff were pleasant & helped with all requests The area where we stopped near the railway station was a lot quieter compared to rialto & Staint Marks square Be prepared to spend money especially when on the canal We both said we would go back to venice as there's loads to see and do. If you get chance visit murano & Burano We also went to Milan on the train Great day out trains are great & only 60 pounds return for 2 people

I would not recommend this hotel at all. Not even because there are 4 stars. We stayed there thinking it would be the best. Luckily, it was only one night. Everything is old, the furniture is old, the bathrooms are almost a latrines. We chose a room overlooking a courtyard. And they gave us a room that was dirty (see photos) when we went to the reception to get a room change, a receptionist, I guess he was the head of the reception, didn't even bother to check if there was another room, he just said that the hotel was full and that he couldn't change us. In other words, he didn't give a damn about customer service. I then went back to the front desk and said I just couldn't stay in that room. Reluctantly, they moved us to another room. There's not even a smart TV, you can't even connect to Netflix, YouTube, nothing. There is only a small TV in the room. The lamps do not work because light bulbs fried, there are only 2 pillows. There are no slippers, the decor sheets are horribly dirty and smelly. I think they're never washed. It was scarier to put things in the safe than to leave them outside because of its dilapidated and rusty state. Foam and dust everywhere. Even if the room is standard category, you have to give something clean. The mattress, I don't think they've changed it in years. We lie down and we sink. At 9:30 in the morning, the cleaning team knocks on your door without warning. It's all bad. Even the roof of the entrance is black full of moulding. Very unpleasant. They can still invest a little in cleaning. Anyway! The only positive is the location if you want or have an early flight as buses and taxis are only a 5 minute walk away. Never this hotel again.

I feel compelled to share my recent disappointing experience at Hotel Carlton Grand Canal in Venice, in the hope that it may aid your decision-making process when planning your trip.
For a price tag of $1000 per night, ( especially when you stay for multiple nights ) one would expect a level of service commensurate with such a hefty fee. However, I regret to inform you that this was not the case. In fact, the service provided by budget motels in the USA far surpasses the lackluster courtesy exhibited by the front desk staff at this establishment.
Allow me to highlight some of the major letdowns encountered during my stay:
1. **Rude Front Desk Staff:** The front desk staff exude an air of entitlement, as if they are doing you a favor by allowing you to stay at their hotel. There is no semblance of a queuing system; they arbitrarily select customers, leaving others waiting indefinitely. On one occasion, after patiently waiting my turn, I was overlooked in favor of another customer. When I raised this issue, the response I received was dismissive and nonsensical: "I don't see - you have to tell me that it's your turn." Such behavior is unacceptable and indicative of a lack of professionalism.
2. **Hygiene Concerns:** A particularly disturbing incident occurred when I witnessed a male kitchen staff member exiting the restroom adjacent to the restaurant without washing his hands. When I brought this blatant disregard for basic hygiene to the attention of the management, their response was shockingly cavalier. Instead of addressing the issue with the seriousness it deserved, the manager remarked, "Well, if he didn't wash his hands there, maybe he'll wash them in the kitchen." Such a flippant attitude towards hygiene is deeply concerning and reflects poorly on the hotel's standards.
Furthermore, it is imperative to address the discrepancy between the hotel's advertised amenities and the reality of the accommodations. The rooms are in desperate need of updating and do not resemble the polished images presented online. As a frequent visitor to Italy, I am well-versed in the standards of hospitality in this country, and the state of the rooms at Hotel Carlton Grand Canal falls far below expectations.
In light of these numerous disappointments, I urge fellow travelers to exercise caution when considering this hotel for their stay in Venice. The combination of poor service, hygiene concerns, and outdated accommodations makes for an unsatisfactory experience that simply does not justify the exorbitant price tag.
Yours sincerely,
A disappointed visitor

Terrible Experience. the Air Conditioning for the entire wing where our room was located was non-functional, we stayed one night in late July in 33c heat with no AC. after informing the front desk they said they can’t do anything about it except send a porter up with a fan. When the porter arrived i showed him that the unit was only recirculating hot air and not cooling in our room and the hallway (you could feel only warm air coming out, but if you moved a few hallways down the units were blowing cold air) after checking the porter confirmed that there is no freon in these unit currently. We were told we could speak to the manager in the morning - which we did, after dealing with a very rude front desk staff that brushed off the issue and just kept pointing at the debit machine repeating “tap” to get us to pay the city tax, I asked if they would cover the tax given we payed for a room with AC and they is not what was delivered, this was denied. Spoke to the manager who was unaware of any AC issues - clearing in the span of 12 hours the night staff are unable to inform management about maintenance issues. he asked if they provided us with one of the portable AC units they have, told him that only a fan was offered. I guess the night staff don’t know about the portable ac units? either way, no refund, no discount, wouldn’t acknowledge the issue and offered us a complimentary drink at the bar. Won’t be going back here - if you are considering this hotel double check your room has AC before paying.
There is another review from July also stating that the AC is broken.

We recently stayed at the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal and were incredibly disappointed with our experience. While the location is undeniably convenient, just across from the train station, the negatives far outweighed the positives.
Upon entering our room, we were met with a musty odor and upon closer inspection, discovered patches of mold in the corners of the ceiling. This was not only unpleasant aesthetically, but also raised concerns about potential health risks.
The restaurant service was another major letdown. The wait times for food were excessive, and to top it off, they completely messed up my order. By the time the correct meal arrived, my appetite had vanished due to the long wait and initial mistake.
To make matters even worse, my wife's jacket went missing from our room during our stay. We reported the theft to the hotel staff immediately, but they have yet to respond or acknowledge our complaint. This lack of communication and follow-up is completely unacceptable.
Overall, our stay at the Hotel Carlton was a major setback to our Venetian vacation. Considering the moldy room, sluggish service, and missing jacket incident, we would strongly advise against staying at this hotel. There are far better options available that prioritize guest comfort and security.

This hotel had a perfect position for us, very close to the train station, bus station and a main vaporetto stop. We found the breakfasts very good, lots of choice including fruit and some hot dishes, as well as the usual continental style. We did not take Dinner at the hotel so cannot comment.
The room was well furnished though only one small window, quite high from the floor and looked out on a small alleyway. St Marks Square is about a 30-40 minute walk away or a 30 minute vaporetto ride, and the Rialto Bridge less than half the distance (by foot or Vaporetto).
We found the staff friendly, helpful and multi-lingual throughout our 5 day stay. As soon as we mentioned the TV was not working, someone came to our room and sorted it out.

Upon entering the hotel it really gives a very good impression, nice reception, piano music playing, all very nice. The reception desk is pretty regular, it looks like they're doing you a favor. The room absolutely disappointing: dark, horrible view to a kind of internal courtyard ceiling, ugly padding, more than ancient, walls enclosed but maintenance-free with an old and stained enclosed. There was no electric kettle to heat water or make coffee in the room! A 4 stars without that? Today all 3 stars give you tea/coffee facilities in the room. The small bathroom, the bathtub with a lousy shower/spout arrangement (I would say very dangerous, it is very easy to hit or fall, nor speak if elderly people go). We had a double bed and two singles for our children that were narrow and even poorly located. It's like they've put two more beds in where you can. Breakfast is good, there is variety. The location is fine if you want to be close to the train station as you cross the bridge (with many stairs) and you are done, for the main attractions you have to walk quite a lot or use the vaporetto all the time.

Three years we stayed at the Carlton on the Grand Canal on our first visit to Venice. Upon writing a review of that stay I complained of the tacky room with pink wallpaper and green carpet, location being too far from Saint Marks and other attractions, and the semi OK buffet breakfast. We just returned from our second trip to Venice and again chose to stay at the Carlton, mostly due to its relatively low price. This visit my impression of the hotel was totally different. We were assigned to a "renovated" room that was beautiful. Even the bath was totally renovated. The buffet breakfast had improved considerably. Lastly, I have changed my mind about the location. This was August and the island was overflowing with tourists. It was great to be at the other end of the Grand Canal from the overflowing Saint Marks. We used the nearby train station to our advantage visiting some towns on the mainland like Treviso. We were also delighted to find behind the hotel dozens of tiny restaurants with outside seating where a great meal could be had for $10.00. I now believe The Carlton on the Grand is a fine hotel worthy of one's consideration.
