3 moms booked this hotel because it was close the the train station.... it was so much better than we had hoped for. We had a room with two double beds and a day bed, a large armoire, and a marble tiled bath (very large by European standards). The front staff desk was great - on a rainy day they...

My family of four spent three wonderful days here in late August. All of the descriptions posted were very accurrate. The hotel is literally steps from the main train station. If you are arriving by train (recomended) from Rome or anywhere else the train trip to Venice is really nice and relaxing. The train from Rome was very modern and...

My husband and I spent our first vacation in years in Venice, and stayed at the Abbazia over December (traditionally a quiet season for tourism in Venice). The hotel is in an excellent location, close to the Plaza de la Roma and a vaporetto stop. There are also pleasant shops and restaurants nearby. Although the hotel is not really that...

We stayed at Hotel Abbazia two days before a cruise. This is a great budget hotel! The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They helped us with all our touristy needs, from restaurant recommendations to transportation. The rooms are small, they don't have any amenities, and we only had a shower (no tub), but the room was very clean. The...

Breakfast was gorgeous-kept us going for the rest of the day. Staff at the hotel were very friendly and extremely helpful. I hope...

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Abbazia during our 2 night stay in Venice. It was a truely great experience - the room was big in European standards, and the bathroom was absolutely wonderful, with an excellent shower. After a few substandard hotels in Italy, this was a godsend. The breakfast was great, and the service superb - fronkdesk...

The stay at this hotel made my travel experience a very pleasant experience. I took my daughter to Italy as a graduation gift and it was one of the factors that made it something to be remembered. The hotel is rated three star hotel, the cost is more like for a two star hotel but I sincerely believe this hotel...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
