When booking the hotel I wasn't quite sure what to expect, it had been rated as a 2 star hotel and I had read some mixed reviews. Upon arriving early, we were greeted by a lovely man at reception who checked us in and we were allowed to go to our room early rather than wait for the 2pm check...

Dear Guests, we follow the rules for pollution of our Country (law n.10 dated 1991 and Dpr n. 412 dated 26th August 1993) that set the time for opening heating in winter and air conditioning on summer. For summer it's the end of May. Even if Venezia is crowded you can left the window opened: without cars and traffic is...

I have just come back from another wonderful stay in this charming hotel. This time I took my mother father and sister in law with me. They all loved it just as much as my son and me. The hotel is a small one with lots of character, unlike some of these larger hotels. The staff are so polite helpful...

I arrive to this hotel after been in the Rio hotel in Venice. I make the check out from the Rio hotel around 11:30 so I was around 11:40 in the Orion hotel. The problem stars: I arrive to the hotel and the receptionist look at me with strange eyes, like I was not supposed to be there, he asks...

Dear Guest, first of all sorry if I looked at you with strange eyes but, as you said, you were two nights in Venezia and you decided to stay one night in an hotel (Rio) and then to move for another night in another hotel (Orion): it seemed to me so weird I was thinking you were confused or wrong,...

I was staying for 2 nights in Venice for my 18th birthday with my 15 yr old sister on our first overseas trip alone. The hotel staff were so kind to us and helped us with lots of things. The hotel is very central and close to San Marco and easy to get around either by walking or on the...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

JAPLondon is correct. Take the vaporetto (water bus) to the San Marco Square station. There are two stations, one on either side of the square (S. Zaccaria and Vallaresso). Either one will be fine for you. Walk right through San Marco Square. After you pass the Basilica on your right, jog a bit to the left and go through an arched street portico (Merceria Orologio) follow the street for a short way. One block before Calle Fibura, turn right into a small street. The hotel is the next to last entry on the left before you emerge into a small square. There is a pizzeria on the right across the street from the hotel entrance and a small convenience store between the hotel and the small square. Look for the hotel name on the glass door.

To get to the train station from the hotel and San Marco Square, go through the square toward the Grand Canal and turn right when you get to the canal. Walk along the canal until you get to a large ACTV vaporetto station (Vallaresso). You'll see ticket lines for the airport and the railway station. Buy your tickets and then get in the proper line for your water bus. It's a direct trip from there.

Me again. Yes, the previous responses are helpful in that they give pre-booking costs through the web, for the Alilaguna water-bus. Useful information. However, what I offered earlier is accurate in what you would pay at the ticket office in the airport, and offers the flexibility of returning to the airport using an alternative means of transport should you decide to. Next time I visit I will return to the airport by bus (€8pp), as the return trip by Alilaguna was not as pleasant as the in-going trip which offers great views as it approaches the aspect of this lovely city.
