We stayed here at the end of January. Although cold and windy as only Venice can be in the Winter, this dear little hotel was very warm and welcoming. It is so central, barely a stone's throw from the Piazza (St Mark's Square) and the waterbus stop - of the same name - it is right next to a gondola...

I stayed at the Violino d'Oro in Oct 2012. The hotel was clean, comfortable and we thought in a pretty good location. We did have a little difficulty navigating through Venice more than the other cities we visited (Rome, Florence & Cinque Terre). The staff was friendly and helpful. They offered tips and happily arranged for a water taxi upon...

My husband and I recently spent 5 nights in Hotel Violino d'Oro which was recommended to us by friends who had stayed there the year before. It is right in the heart of Venice, a short 5 minute walk past great shops from the ferry wharf to the hotel. It is situated right beside a canal which is very quiet...

Our room was meant for two and we were three, so we had to put all the beds one right next to the other so nobody would hit the lamps on the wall. The bathroom was okay, had the towel heater, but the shower was dreadful, it kept moving towards the wall.

Spent three nights at this hotel, very cosy and nice, tasty breakfast, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, perfect location. The price was reasonable, taking into account the time of Carnival. I advise everybody to stay at this Venice hotel.

Very close to San Marco - next to Salvatore Ferragamo. Definitely no shortage of shopping around here. Location wise it is excellent! Gondolas were literally on the door step. Rooms were spacious and warm (in winter). Breakfast was good. Staff were attentive at all times and helpful.

Spent two nights at this small hotel located just a short walk from the vaporetto stop at San Marco. We had seen several reviews of this property and decided to book on the strength of these. We were not disappointed. The hotel is small but comfortable. The location is perfect, just a five minute walk to Piazza San Marco and...

Nice hotel and is really close to San Marco square. Nicely set up within walking distance to any attraction you want to see in Venezia as a tourist. Very quiet and peaceful. We had our room booked in advance and got a great discount for it. Also there is gondola station next to the hotel and during breakfast we were...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
