The hotel is located in convenient walking distance from St. Marks and the staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was located just up from the lobby so was noisy in the early morning but overall the hotel was a great value.

What a lovely, friendly, family run hotel. Ok so it's not the most luxurious but the location is excellent and the staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. It's easy to locate when you come off the vaporetto from the airport (San Zaccaria), no problems with lugging cases through the streets or over bridges. It's literally a couple of minutes...

Second visit to the Fontana for us. Persuaded our friends to come this time. 4 nights in this lovely, family run, hotel, close to St Marks Square. When we visit Venice again this is the place we will stay. Thanks again for helping us have a great visit to your fabulous city.....

This was our 9th visit to Venice and this is one of the most relaxing hotels we have stayed in. Friendly, helpful staff, family run hotel. Also has a lift which not all Venetian hotels do. The location is very central - just 2 bridges to Piazza San Marco and 2 bridges to Campo Santa Maria Formosa, which is a...

Had an amazing stay here at the Hotel Fontana for two nights from the 24th March 2015. The hotel was in the most ideal location, a great base for venturing around Venice by foot. It was no further than a 3-5 Minute walk to St Marks Square and probably a 15 minute walk to the Rialto Bridge. Shops, restaurants and...

Nice and quiet family run hotel, very close to San Marco square (approx 5 mins walk). Friendly staff (all speak excellent English). Rooms a bit old fashioned - but clean and somehow the style adds to the "real" Italian experience; nice and warm (in March); fresh towels every day. Basic continental style breakfast, cute little bar area behind reception (very...

A quiet Hotel situated near San Zacharia square. I couldnt have wished for a better stay. Room was immaculately clean, towels on tap, none of this rubbish of saving towels to be green. The staff were wonderfully warm and friendly and breakfast more than adequate, I would have to give this hotel 10 out of 10. The owners are very...

I have stayed at Hotel Fontana for holidays over the past 20 years, and many times twice yearly. That in itself would be the highest recommendation. I previously stayed in Venice hotels where I was treated as merely a client. I then discovered the Fontana where the staff are genuinely concerned that your stay at the hotel and in Venice...

Couldn't fault a thing. Stayed 4 nights this feb. Staff were helpful, polite and welcoming. Rooms were clean and modern and very comfortable and warm in winter. Shower was hot and powerful with complimentary toiletries. i got a chance to look at the palace opposite which they use as overflow rooms and it's absolutely beautiful, the restoration is lovely and...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
