During Easter my boyfriend and I (age 34 and 30) stayed at Hotel Al Vagon for a week. We had a very pleasant stay! The room was nice and clean with a view to the canal, and the bathroom was nice as well. Great service and friendly hotel staff. I'm very surprised that the hotel only has one star, at...

I stayed here twice and I had a good experience both times. The rooms with shower were clean. The location was excellent, not too far from the boat station and quite near rialto. There was even a cheap pizza place/coffee shop just outside the hotel, which was good for budget travellers.

Hotel Al Vagon was a great value. Our room was clean, and pleasant. The hotel is well-located, very near the Rialto Bridge and lots of activity, and yet the room was very quiet. The owner was personable and attentive. I would stay there again.

Central location, surrounded by cafes and shops. Pleasant rooms decorated in venetian style. Good maid service. Independent access, we had our own key.

My friend and I recently traveled to Italy and had a most charming stay at this hotel. We had a lovely room with private bath in the annex - super clean and nicely appointed. The room was perfectly quiet and peaceful to sleep in, yet was excellently located so that stepping outside the door one was right in the center...

I've been in venice for three days and I've spent two nights in this Hotel. It's cheap for the place and for the rooms: it's 5 minutes by walk from Piazza San Marco, 1 minutes from Ponte di Rialto and exactly in the middle of the town. The rooms are clean with good furnitures and bathroom is enough to relax...

Hotel Alvagon is situated close to Rialto but in a rather quiet zone. You can easily reach everywhere by foot or vaporetto (Rialto and Cà D'oro stations are near the hotel) and there are lots of nice restaurants and cichetterie in the neighbourhood. Our room was basic but very clean, and with incredible views to the canal!. We stayed for...

This hotel is in a superb location. A couple of minutes walk from the Rialto bridge, you have access to all areas. The hotel is of good standard, clean rooms and cleaned daily. We also had a shower/toilet area. The hotel staff were always there to help and extremely polite and helpful. We had no problems checking in early and...

The room is not glamorous, but the view is! Room #25 had a view of the canal and a little bridge over it leading to a piazza with a church. The epitome of a Venice vacation. Room is stark, think Motel 6, but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. The shower is tiny but adequate. No elevator. Off...

The Hotel Al Vagon is a great find in the heart of Venice. Located just a five minute walk north of the Rialto Bridge, the Al Vagon is in a great location for exploring the city. My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon in mid October 2007. We booked a “superior” double room with a private bath and...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
