Venice was the first stop on our two week vacation in Italy. I must say Locanda Silva was a little disappointing. Firstly there was no lift and we stayed on the third floor. The reception staff was courteous but a bit more warmth would have been appreciated. The room was decent enough, though no TV. (We later realized that it...

this hotel was more a hostel than hotel with shared bathrooms and toilets. We had a room with a shower and toilet but it wasnt the cleanest. The cleaning staff were good and we did our washing here, having to hang it out between the buildings. Breakfast was good. Overall the place could do with a good clean.

I didn't really enjoy this hotel. This is the second time I've been to Venice. Both times I stayed in a hotel close to St. Mark's Square. Both times Venice has driven me crazy because there are too many people and too many of the same shops everywhere around St Marks area. During this trip my fiance & I travelled...

We paid extra to have a room with a private bathroom/shower, which was not worth the money at all! The shower and the mirror above the sink had mold, mildew, and soap scum all over - it looked like the bathroom had not been cleaned in quite some time. When mentioning this to the owner, she said rudely that she...

We reserved a room with the toilet and shower outside of the room. The toilet was down one way and the shower down another way. Our room had a sink and a mirror in it. The room was not like the pictures looked like, way smaller and more old fashioned. The beds were uncomfortable and saggy. For the price we...

Does everyone have the same trouble finding La Conda Silva? Ah well, that's Venice. The hotel is in a good spot, handy to San Marco and the Grand Canal and vaporetto stops and nicely situated on a small canal. More like a hostel than a hotel, staff are efficient and helpful if at times seemingly brusque. A comfy bed, peaceful...

I stayed in Locanda Silva for four nights in late March 2010 sharing a three-bed room with two friends. The location is excellent, just five minutes walk from the madness of St. Mark's Square in a quieter part of the city. With this in mind, the price is excellent value, as cheaper accommodation further outside of the city often requires...

The hotel wasn't as expensive as most in Venice and is located in a lovely area - which is always a con! the room was clean and comfortable although I had a terrible air con system and the fan made weird noises. The service was ok, I didn't think people at the reception were particularly helpful when I asked them...

not the easiest hotel to find, but then again, what in venice is easy to find aside from st. mark's square?! the location is good (close to both st. mark's and rialto bridge). the single room was small, but clean. although the view from my window (room #14) was pretty, the traffic on the canal was very loud (although that...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
