We chose this hotel because of its location: across from the Gritti Palace (closed for renovation) and a few minutes away from Piazza San Marco. Because it belongs to the Best Western chain of hotels, we believed it would guarantee a certain level of comfort and cleanliness. The hotel is indeed well located, but if you are going to Venice...

We usually put up at Best Western hotels so that we ensure a reliable quality. This hotel is very-well positioned. You reach it from the railway station (Ferrovia) water bus line 1(vaporetto) getting off at San Giglio after a 20 minutes ride. You walk to San Marco in 5 minutes, to La Fenice and Campo Santo Stefano, in 3. The...

We stayed during March 2012. The hotel was easy to find by water taxi. Great location, 10 minutes walk to all the main sites. Staff very helpful stayed in room 460 with a balcony and spa bath, great for relaxing after a long day out seeing the sites. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice. Good hotel bar with...

With easy access from the ferry, we found our way from the train station to this delightful hotel without trouble. (Take ferry #1 for about 12 stops. It's a great ride on the grand canal and the best deal in town.) The hotel is just two minutes walk from San Marco Square, so the location is outstanding. The rooms are...

I stayed there during Carnival this year for the first time. I loved the location being a very short walk from the vaporetto stop and also a 10 minute walk from Piazza San Marcos. The breakfast is everything one could ask for and the staff that serve it were very gracious. Do have the hot chocolate. It is fantastic. My...

This is my 3rd visit to the Hotel Ala, and once again, they did not disappoint. As usual the staff were great, they are customer focused and always friendly and helpful. The location is perfect, being located in easy walking distance of St. Mark's square, and less than 50 metres from Vaporetto stop "San Giglio". (Catch Vaporetto No. 1 from...

I stayed here for one night during a brief stay in Venice on my way to Cortina. The hotel was located very close to San Marco Square and all the shops and restuarants. It was a typical European type room which was small but the room was comfortable and clean. I did not see an elevator but it's only four...

Perfect location straight off the San Giglio vaporetto stop so is ideal if you have bags and cases. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms on small side but this is typical of Venice but could not fault the cleanliness - we had clean sheets and towels each day, odd considering we're all trying to save the planet. We had...

Very close to the San Giglio vaporetto stop and a short walk from St Mark's, the Ala is very conveniently placed. The staff were helpful and friendly. Our room was as small as so many rooms are in France and Italy but it was warm and comfortable in the middle of a freezing cold spell. There are restaurants close by...

I stayed at Hotel Ala with my mother and husband in September 2011. After much research, we decided on Hotel Ala for location, price and based on other reviews. We were happy with our choice. The rooms are small and a little dark, but we were not in Venice to be inside a hotel room! The location is ideal as...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
