After flying into Marco Polo airport, my husband and I followed the directions in Rick Steeve's book. We bought our tickets for the Vaporetto and, after leaving the airport, followed signs (left) for the docks. We waited a short bit before boarding the Vaporetto and enjoyed the ride to Venice. We got off at Saint Mark's, and had to ask...

We booked a superior room for our first wedding anniversary and had an amazing stay. Our room was in the attic and there are a few steps to climb from the lift but nothing unreasonable and staff carried my bags when we checked in. The room was not huge but at the same not to small either. It was very...

The only good thing about this hotel was location, close to the water bus and the main tourist areas. Nothing else. Upon arrival we were shown to a small room where we had to carry our own luggage to, no lifts or help. The staff were very consistently rude and unhelpful. Ignoring questions, unhelpful answers, we felt like we are...

As other reviewers have pointed out, you need to take the stairs to get from the ground floor to the first floor for part of the hotel. This wasn't much of an issue as the porter carried our bags to the room. The room was fairly clean and well furnished, but given that it we had paid for a "Deluxe...

A comfortable and pleasant 3 star hotel with staff who work hard to please. Only 50 metres from the No 1 ferry stop so easy to get to from the railway. Nearby is a provision shop for those important snacks and beers. Piazza St Marco only a stroll away. Our room was on the 4th floor (attic) and very nice...

Our trip started in Istanbul and then we boarded a ship to cruise Ephesus, the Greek Islands, Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia. Our cruise ended in Venice and we decided to spend an additional three nights in Venice. We were very disappointed in our room, the service and the lack of elevator from the main floor to our room. The people...

Once in Venice, you notice quite a few hotels, as the island is a large tourist trap embedded in a historic city. So with that in mind, location of your Hotel becomes key. We stayed here because of it's proximity to St. Marco square and traveling with a six year old has it's challenges. Our room was quite nicely appointed...

After the mixed reviews on here was slightly nervous and had good reason to be. There were three in our party and selected two superior rooms (both with double beds) but upon arriving they noted that there were only three of us and tried to give us a room with two single beds that were one above the other (ie...

I actually stayed here several years ago- I think it was 2004. My memories are so fond, I still think about it and decided to write a review. It was so interesting inside- there was so much character. We even had real heavy wood shutters on our room and the window looked right out onto a canal, I remember a...

Hotel was well positioned and communal areas were attractive. However, one sofa and two armchairs were all the seating available in the lounge area, which I felt was rather inadequate for a hotel of this size. Breakfast however, was a highlight with a vast range of fresh produce - we really were spoilt for choice. Initially we were rather disappointed...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
