Forst the postiives- very good location, friendly staff, breakfast was good- although espresso from coffee machine wasn't! Our room (302 is the one to avoid!) though was not great- we were on the ground floor close to the recpetion/breakfast room which meant noise from around 6.30am. It was dark- it looked out on to the inner courtyard and our privacy...

This hotel was the perfect choice for a 2 night break. The location is great for exploring most of the sights by foot. It is a about a 10-15 minute stroll from St Marks Square. The hotel is quite small but very friendly and has everything you need for your stay. The rooms are clean and are stocked well with...

This was our second stay at this hotel, so we were obviously happy enough after our first stay in 2012 to return. Happily nothing that we like about this hotel seems to have changed too much. It is not the plushest of hotels but is clean and comfortable (although the Italians do seem to like hard beds!). It is 2...

We were 2 friends enjoying Carnevale and chose this hotel because of its location in Castello, an area we hadn't stayed in before. We chose a room overlooking the lagoon and awoke to a lovely view of Venice each morning. The hotel staff were excellent - helpful and informative. The room was nicely presented and clean, although wardrobe space was...

Lovely place around The Arsenale. We had a room with canal view. Noise from resataurants filtered but that's only because we chose a room right above. Lovely breeze and not crowded. Plenty of eataries in the area. Good view of the canal. Will definitely stay here again

We stayed here in mid Feb for part of carnival. No regrets what-so-ever! The staff we encountered were all first class. They had some work experience students helping and they were all lovely too. The room was fairly spacious and we got a free upgrade to a lagoon view which was great. The room was clean and maid service daily....

Stayed here for a short break before Christmas. The hotel is nicely furnished and the rooms are of good size and comfortable. During our visit we had good weather and we spent one afternoon sitting outsie the hotel watching the world go by and drinking wine, which was a bargain at 10 euris a bottle from the hotel bar. We...

This is a lovely hotel with friendly helpful staff, nice location by water with its own water taxi jetty, rooms are a good size - ours had a wet room but that may be because we asked for an accessible room, (room 303) good plentiful continental breakfast. Ca formenta is more than 20 mins walk to St Marks Square if...

Good location if you are going around by the vaporetto. Staff are cheerful and friendly. One of the ladies at breakfast is grumpy, I hope everything is going well in her life.....Breakfast is good but the space is a bit strange. Well, limitation of an old small building i guess. LOVE THEIR SHAMPOO it was good on Asian hair (other...

Booked a room with a view, for pre cruise sojourn. Hotel is nicely furnished in the Venetian manor. Hotel staff was pleasant, helpful and efficient. Although our room was small, as is the case in Venice It was provided with a sizable bathroom. Breakfast was provided in the European manner, and was plentiful. Local restaurants were located just round the...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
