We were pretty bummed out about this hotel, but the upside is that it was not that expensive and was right in San Marco. We surely could have done better for the same money, but maybe a coule of blocks further from the square. That doesn't really matter that much since you expect to be walking around all the time...

Chose this hotel based on the bulk of recommendations on TripAdvisor. Location and service both very good. Front desk staff always very helpful. Room as predicted was pretty small as was the bathroom, shower too small for a 6 footer. But hey, this is central Venice, and you don't expect to spend a lot of time in your room anyway....

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Venice and wanting to have excellent accommodatino without paying top dollar. Hotel Mercurio is in an excellent location, close to many tourist spots but off the beaten track so it is quiet and peaceful. The staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. The rooms are tidy, the sheets clean, the bathrooms new....

This hotel is in a great location - close to the Rialto Bridge and Saint Mark's Square (less than 10 minutes to each). It's on a quiet little alley, as a lot of places in Venice are, and right next to a canal. It was a little difficult to find when we arrived in the dark around midnight (streets are...

Venice is very expensive, particularly for a location this close to St Marks Square. Our room was quite basic, but it was clean and had a window overlooking the canal. Overall i felt this hotel represented good value.

When we arrived in Venice there was extremely high tide. We didn't know that all the streets would be full of water - making it impossible to reach the hotel... I wish some one had warned us - we would've taken wellington boots... The water did go down after about an hour but just check out the tides - or...

We found the Hotel without much difficulty, but were glad we travelled light, with only one bag each (on casters0..there are three sets of steps to go over from the water taxi stop, to the hotel. The welcome was great, and I appreciated the help up the steps from the front desk manager! The room overlooked the canal, with a small...

Well this hotel was just great! Its tucked away in an alley in Venice just about 10 minute walk from St Mark Sq. We did find the place quite easily however I believe it was just luck. There are alot of "little alleys" there but we found it. The hotel is small and there is no lift. We stayed on...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
