After waiting 40 minutes, with no wifi or capability of entering his property(which does not have a lobby), we borrowed a cellphone from a local shop ownder and called him. He explained to us that there was a spare key he had hidden for us to use. To me this is not a very serious way to greet visitors. I...

Felt unserious. We had to get our key from the nearby restaurant. He started to argument about the payment but the next day he said he mixed our booking with another one. He really tried to make it up and apologized but the first day and the first meeting was actually quite horrible. I think we just had an unlucky...

My mother and I stayed with Alex for two nights. The hostel is small but charming. The room was clean, bathrooms were small but had hot water, beds were alright and Alex was very friendly (very talkative, but very sweet). Breakfast wasn't much, so we never relied on it. It's mostly just yogurt and coffee or tea. Other than that,...

This is a charming spot in the heart of Venice. Alex, the owner, takes great care and pride in the place and will be sure any needs are met. He's one of the most accommodating hosts. Rooms are great, clean, well-kept and the price can't be beat. Will definitely stay next time in Venice!

Alex was VERY friendly host. Maybe too friendly. I felt a bit uncomfortable. I left Venice a few days early and it seemed Alex took that personally and told me how disappointed he was. The pillow case was dirty, stapled on, but Alex had told me he didn't get all the laundry back from the facility, good thing I had...

I loved my stay at this hostel, though it was only one night. The host, Alex, was really nice and helpful. I stayed in the single room with the queen bed and shared bathroom downstairs. It was a beautiful, clean and simple room. The location was perfect to me because it was close to everything, but it was not in...

Very comfortable apartment, well equipped with everything to make your holiday stay a pleasure. Though the apartment may seem a little out of the way, easy access to the vaporetto makes access to the major sights simple, with the added advantage of a scenic ride. Should you wish to walk the main shopping area is only a few minutes away....

I stayed here 4 nights. This little B&B is minutes away from St. Mark's Square. It is a typical Venetian townhouse in a tiny back alley. Be prepared to get lost finding the place! Friendly, engaging neighbors. Rooms are simple, quiet, clean and spacious. No ac, but with the fans I was never uncomfortable. Good night's sleep every night. Shared...

I had a difficult time to find affordable lodging in Venice; this was the only place that fit my budget. We arrived in a rainstorm at our arranged meeting time, but no one answered the door. After getting totally soaked and waiting over an hour, we finally met someone to let us in. Turns out he was home the whole...

It was my first trip to Venice, but I must say I loved it. Our staying here was really delightful, Alex is really nice and we can see he really wants to make our stay as good as he can. The location is just perfect, a few minutes from the St. Marco square and any other shop or place you...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
