Hotel Alex was pretty good for the price. We stayed a few days during our honeymoon and were fairly impressed. The room was large and clean and had a balcony where we sat and read every night. There's a good gelato and pizza place pretty close by. I didn't care for Venice as much as I thought I would, but...

Myself and my fiance stayed in Venice for two nights, and I expected everything to be very expensive in and around the S. Marco area. So I took a chance with Hotel Alex and decided to stay in this one star establishment in the S. Polo area of the city. And the chance paid off. Everything in S. Marco is...

I stayed at Hotel Alex with my partner for two nights. I realise that hotels in Venice are very expensive, but this was good value at €104 per night for the two of us. Our room was number 9 on the top floor and bear in mind there are no lifts. The room is very basic, bed, bedside tables, a...

We just got back from a one night stay in Venice at the Hotel Alex and wanted to write to say how great a place it is for the price. The hotel was clean, it was in an excellent location, and they were very accomodating. When one person in our group had to cancel at the last minute due to...

Have just returned from a four night stay at this little hotel/pension. Mario and his family made us feel very welcome. The room was spotless and of a good size, ok the furniture was old but it was Venitian! Our little balcony overlooked the street with a side view of the canel. Breakfast was the usual croissants ect, with wonderful...

Very nice room with a great view of the street. The owners were very helpful and were always there to answer any of are questions. We go to Venice twice a year and have found the place we will stay at in the Hotel Alex.

Nothing fancy about this place, paid 40 euros for a single room on the top floor in December 2005. The place seemed very clean. My room even had a balcony. Shared bath on the same floor and shared shower one floor below. Plenty of heat and hot water. Breakfast minimal but what do you expect. Bed comfort was adequate. Location...

We spent a weekend at the Hotel Alex in Venice and the entire experience was a disappointing one. We went there knowing it was a one-star hotel and expected spartan-like accomodation (which it was) but I must say it is undeserving of even that one little star. The comforter on the bed was filthy, there was very little hot water...

Staying in San Polo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
