Over many years I have visited Venice six times and can say that this is the best place I have stayed in.Unless you can afford the top notch hotels the quality of others doesn't always live up to expectations. This is the exception.I wasn't too sure what to expect from a very small hotel (just 6 rooms-more of a B&B really)...

This was an adequate place in the Cannaregio area of Venice. About a 7 minute walk to the train offf a quiet little canal. Though the room over the entrance can be a little loud at times with the local kids playing in the courtyard, you might also find those sounds of Italian children playing part of the charm. The...

The Casa Ai Due Leoni is a true jewel in Venice - and a resonably priced one. I loved, loved, loved this hotel. All rooms are named and they are very clean and comfortable. Beautiful brocade draperies that match the small sofa. We were lucky enough to have one of the double rooms that has a small sitting room and...

What a great find in a quieter part of Venice! The hotel is lovely, with large rooms and ensuite bathroom. Everything about the place was delightful from the staff to the breakfast in the garden to the comfort of the room. The place is near a canal boat line so it is easy to get to/from anywhere including the train...

Wonderful little hotel in a small cul-de-sac within easy walking distance from the train/bus station. It is in a quite neighborhood but there is a street with all the amenities not far away. The staff was very helpful helping us locate the sites (they even provided a map for us). Our room was on the ground floor and had a...

We reserved this hotel over 6 months prior to the trip. My reservation said a room with double occupancy for 80 euro/ night, we should have a hair dryer in room, mini bar, safe and indivisual air conditioner and shared bathroom which is common in Venice - NONE of those items were in the room. When complained, the hotel explained...

Casa Ai Due Leoni is a very well run hotel located in a quiet courtyard off one of the main canals. It is about a ten minute walk from the train station or Piazzale Roma or you can take a waterbus from either of these locations if you have luggage. The waterbus drops you almost at the door of the...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
